Here are the steps you’ll take to find a new pet:

Complete an adoption application:
Adoption applications are available at our front desk or you can click here to download and print an application and bring it with you when you visit. Please note that the adoption process does not begin until you arrive at our facility and submit your application in person. Applicants are served in the order in which they arrive that day.

Bring the following:
A copy of documentation (such as a lease) that states you are permitted to have a dog if you are renting or belong to a neighborhood association.
You must show this documentation before you meet a dog.
Your children who are 11 and younger.
Your Dog(s) if you are interested in adopting a dog.
Please note that the dog remains available to meet other applicants until documentation is brought and the dog has met with your children and your other dog(s).
A photo ID with current address.

Meet with the adoption counselor:
The counselor will review your application; discuss your personal situation and past pet history. If you and the pet make a good match, you’ll get to spend a little time with the pet before a decision is made.

When the adoption is approved:
The animal will have a health evaluation; you will complete final paperwork and pay all adoption fees.

Surgery is scheduled for spay or neutering.
Your new pet will be spayed or neutered before you take it home. In most cases you won’t take your new pet home the same day unless it is already spayed or neutered.


All unaltered animals who are old enough for surgery will have the surgery done before leaving our facility. The costs are: male cat neuter $109.00, female cat spay $149.00, male dog neuter $169.00, female dog spay $194.00. If the animal is too young for surgery (typically those under 4 months) a surgery deposit in the above amount will be made and the adopter may schedule the surgery at the time of the follow-up exam.

We encourage adopters to have kittens and cats tested for Feline Leukemia and AIDS. One combo test for both is available for $61.00. A heartworm blood test for dogs is also encouraged. This is available for $31.00.

Heartworm and flea preventive medications are available for an additional charge dependent upon the animal's weight at the time of adoption. Animals over 5 months of age must have a negative heartworm test before beginning preventive treatment.

Our Bensalem facility is our only location and adoptable animals may be viewed 31 hours each week during our adoption hours. We are open for adoption:
Tuesday: 12pm-6:30pm
Wednesday: 12pm-6:30pm
Thursday: 12pm-6:30pm
Friday: 10am-3pm
Saturday: 10am-4:30pm.
Adoptions are closed Sundays and Mondays.

All adoptions are first come, first served- defined as an applicant at our facility with a completed application submitted at the time that the animal is available. We do not maintain lists, pool applications, charge application fees, or hold animals.

Founded in 1869, there are many firsts in our history- the first humane animal shelter, first low cost veterinary clinic and first animal ambulance service to name a few.
We are a full-service, all-access 501 (c) (3) animal welfare organization offering humane education, cruelty investigations, sheltering and adoptions, a veterinary clinic and hospital surgeries by appointment.

We will seek out rescue for special needs animals or those who are overwhelmed by the shelter environment.
