My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Niko's journey has been filled with challenges, but his spirit remains unbroken as he searches for a place to call his forever home.
He is wary around men, but after a few visits and right environment, he can learn to trust and thrive. He's done this before with his last adopter. Niko's love for belly scratches, sunbathing, and treats shines through, showing his potential to be a loyal and loving companion. He also enjoys sitting next to his person observing and maybe quietly judging people walking by. Despite his aversion to cats, Niko has shown promise with kids and is eager to find a family who will cherish him for the special dog he is. He walks well on a leash and knows some basic commands.
Are you ready to open your heart and home to Niko and give him the love and security he deserves?

More about this shelter

The Allegany County Animal Shelter serves as the municipal shelter for Allegany County and is located at 716 Furnace Street in Cumberland. For many years, the shelter served as the final destination for nearly 85% of the animals that entered it. In late 2010, a group of passionate citizens led the charge to change the nature of the shelter with a goal of doing as much as possible for every animal, every day. It was the first step on the journey to becoming A Shelter of Hope.
