My story

This handsome hound is looking for his forever family. Ryder is a 4 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound weighing 55 pounds. He is very sweet, friendly and loving. As is common with a hound, he is vocal but he's just asking us to come and hang out with him for some special attention.

Ryder likes to play with other dogs so if you currently have one in your home, we will set up a meet and greet to be sure they are a good fit. We vat tested Ryder and he passed. He sniffed one but really had no interest in them. We are looking for a home with a fully fenced yard with direct access from the home so Ryder can run and play safely.

If this sweet boy sounds like the perfect new family member, you can meet him on Saturdays from 10-2 at 809 Rockford Rd SW in Cedar Rapids. Please fill out an application prior to your visit so we can learn more about you and your family.

Their adoption process

1.

Meet the Pet

We recommend that potential adopters come to our Safe Place shelter on any Saturday, between 10am and 2pm, to meet our resident dogs.

2.

Submit Application

Potential adopters/fosters over 21 may submit an application online, via snailmail, or in person.

3.

Approve Application

If your application (with references) is approved, you will be notified. We are all volunteers so please be patient with us.

4.

Home Check

If you already have other animals, an additional off-site meet & greet may be required to ensure compatibility.

5.

Sign Adoption Contract

The adoption fee (based upon the dog's age) must be paid when the adoption contract is signed.

6.

Take the Pet Home

You will be asked to provide our Adoption Committee with updates regarding how your new family member is adapting.

Additional adoption info

Both Adopters and Fosters are required to complete an application that includes two personal references and a vet reference (if applicable). When reference checks are complete, a home visit will be scheduled for applicants deemed a feasible potential match. Our adoption fees are age-based; $150 for senior dogs (7 years and older); $175 for dogs 1-6 years; $200 for dogs under 1 year of age. If you are 65 years or older, the adoption fee is waived when you adopt a senior dog. All Dogs Forever dogs are vaccinated against rabies and distemper/parvo, tested for heartworm and Lyme disease, and are microchipped. They are on heartworm preventative. All Dogs Forever dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Go meet their pets

Dogs Forever Safe Place is located at 809 Rockford Road SW in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We are just down the road from the Ice Arena. Our front door faces the right field of Kernels stadium. We are typically open to the public from 10am-2pm every Saturday. Due to COVID-19, we are following facemask and social distancing guidelines mandated by our State Governor.

More about this shelter

Dogs Forever Safe Place provides refuge for homeless dogs, where they receive loving care, free of fear and free of the threat of being euthanized. This is their sanctuary until Dogs Forever places them with a reputable rescue, a no-kill shelter or a forever family. Many of the dogs residing at Safe Place come from kill shelters where they were at risk of being euthanized or from other Iowa counties that have no animal shelter.
