NOTES FROM FOSTER HOME:
Some restrictions due to Niall's specific needs: no apartments; must have working/herding dog experience and fenced yard.
Niall is a very sweet boy who loves to play and has A LOT of energy- the kind where a walk around the block will not be enough. He loves to play fetch and would love to keep going long after you tire;) But he also goes on to entertain himself with his soccer-like ball when you're done and this is why he needs a fenced yard. Unlike many dogs who will just sit when alone in the yard, he uses the space to play and run for fun.
Niall needs mental stimulation besides exercise. He can and will get bored so toys, brain games, training, tricks, and other new/ novel stimulation will help keep him happy and satisfied. He is really smart and loves to learn so he needs and wants a job. When it comes to breed specifics, Niall is definitely ALL Pumi. He is a herding dog. He looks to you for the next direction. He would excel at Agility, herding sheep for fun, living on a farm and being put to work!
As a result, he is not a dog for a novice. While a wonderful dog he requires boundaries and an understanding of his instincts and desires so they can be harnessed to benefit both you and he. Niall has shown some minor resource guarding (growling) when trying to take a toy from him- both from people and other dogs however, he most often readily drops the ball and awaits you to throw it more often. This is just something to be aware of and to understand how to manage and work on over time. Resource guarding is one of the easiest things to work with because it's predictable, therefore you can manage his environment and behavior to improve.
Niall is very loving and enjoys pets and attention. He enjoys spending time with other dogs that are not too dominant. He desires a human leader to help manage him and the other dogs, so structure and training are critical to his success. As he is a herding breed with strong instincts, cats and small animals are not a good fit for him.
Niall's grooming needs are high-maintenance and require consistent attention and regular brushing and grooming visits. His coat mats easily and this can be very painful and more expensive to deal with once it happens, so be sure to consider a budget for grooming in the cost of his care.
Welcome to Motley Zoo Animal Rescue! We are a rock and roll themed, volunteer-run, foster based, 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization based in Redmond, WA.
Motley Zoo is a FOSTER BASED organization, which means our rescue animals are cared for in private foster homes where the animals receive one-on-one care and attention in a home environment until permanent placement is found.
We do not have animals available for casual viewing and do not perform same day adoptions. Due to the volunteer run structure and decentralized/ virtual nature of a foster based group, an approved application is required to make an adoption appointment to meet any of our animals.
If you are interested in one of our Adoptable Roadies, please email adopt@motleyzoo.org and request an adoption application (the auto-responder also has a link to our application). We will work toward getting you approved as an adopter so that we can set a time for you to meet your new best friend!
Please visit our website www.motleyzoo.org for more information!
Thanks for considering adoption- we look forward to helping you find your best match in a furry friend.
