My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Terrier mix | 2 years | Male | 33 lbs
*We cannot guarantee breed nor age.

Temperament: Pepper has a lovely, sweet temperament. He loves being close to his people, and will happily snuggle up for some Netflix and Chill, or accept affection at other times. HOWEVER, too much affection overstimulates Pepper, which can escalate to play nipping and mouthing. Therefore, Pepper's optimal adopters will be able to resist excessive affection, and keep a ceiling on his excitement levels.
Activity Level: Pepper gets 1.5 hours of walks every day with enrichment activities and play time in between. He has high levels of puppy energy and excitement, and a back yard would be ideal to allow Pepper to get his ya yas out in between walks. His play style is very mouthy, and while not aggressive, Pepper must be supervised during play. Unsupervised and unregulated play can lead to Pepper getting too amped up, so he must have hands-on people who will help guide him in appropriate play.
Vetting: Core vaccines (dh2pp, Rabies). Neutered, microchipped, dewormed, fecal - negative for parasites, on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. 4dx blood test negative for Ehrlichia and Anaplasmosis and negative for Heartworm disease.
Housebroken: 98%. When Pepper arrives in a new environment, he does try to pee inside - however, he learns VERY quickly that the bathroom is outside. He's had no accidents in his foster home, and only tried to pee inside on his first day.
Good with dogs: Pepper would LOVE to be a second dog, but because he's young and still learning boundaries, Pepper's potential dog sibling should be playful, but easily controlled by their handlers. A dog sibling with even a little reactivity is not the right fit. Pepper has been doing extremely well with the tolerant dogs in his foster home (and there are 4 of them!) but even the best of them has given some "back off" signals to Pepper during play. We expect that once he builds a relationship with a dog sibling, Pepper will be a great playmate for a dog who's looking for a canine best friend.
Good with Cats: No. Cannot share his home with cats due to his high prey drive.
Good with Children: No children introductions yet. However, Pepper can get overwhelmed when meeting new people, and best practices should be observed when introducing Pepper to respectful children. This means giving him space, letting him approach, and not cuddling/smothering him before he's at ease. If he's overwhelmed by strangers, Pepper may -and has- nipped to signal his discomfort. We have not witnessed any true aggression, but to be on the safe side, only older children who are able to regulate themselves and follow trainer instructions should be considered.
Any noted prey drive: Will give anything to chase a squirrel - yelping/barking at squirrels. Will also bark at some, but not all, cyclists/motorists/fire trucks - this is being worked on in his foster home and adopters must be willing to be consistent with Pepper's leash walking skills.
How do they respond to the outdoors: Loves walks!! He's been tested on downtown busy streets and walks similarly to less busy streets. He loves to do a good sniffing adventure in the enclosed backyard.
Crate trained: Pepper is excellent in the crate. He'll put up a little resistance about going in, but once inside, Pepper will happily chew a marrow bone or a kong while crated. He is quiet and tends to just doze off. We strongly recommend that crate time and training is continued. Pepper is not given free run of the house when his fosters aren't home.
Any resource guarding: He can display resource guarding around high value items such as marrow bones. This will need to be managed in his home, especially if he shares his home with another canine sibling.
Response to commands: Knows ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, ‘stay’ and ‘come’, but needs practice. Pepper also knows his name, and should continue developing recall. He is extremely sharp, learns very fast, and will thrive with a family who enjoys training, tricks and engaging Pepper's mind.
Are they vocal: Pepper can be a bit vocal at unexpected sounds outdoors, however, once he's settled in his crate, Pepper is very quiet, and he's a generally quiet roommate who isn't a disturbance at all.
Leash etiquette: Needs work. Pepper pulls and is learning to walk WITH his owner and not just exist in his own world. However, Pepper is small, smart and easily engaged, so somebody with leash walking aptitude and experience will be able to develop Pepper's leash skills with ease. First time dog owners are not recommended here, but an experienced handler will have Pepper in leash walking shape in no time.
Transportation: Good in the car (loves a good hug and being on your lap to look out the window and give many face licks). Not tested on public transit.
*Pepper’s bio may change as we get to know him better.
*Comes with 6 weeks of pet insurance plus 2 free online group training classes.
*Due to the number of applications we have been receiving, our team is only able to respond to applicants that will be moving forward as we are an entirely volunteer-run organization.

Overall, Pepper is an outstanding, special dog with a truly sparkly and loving personality. He's sweet, clever, and wants to learn. That's why it's so important that energetic Pepper ends up with a family who already has experience shaping dogs into good canine citizens. He is definitely not for the first time dog owner. His best case scenario is a home with a fenced yard, a balanced, playful dog sibling, and owners who can provide consistent boundaries and love!
