My story

Blu is being fostered in Virginia.

Are you looking for a four-legged friend who has endless love and snuggles to give? Well, then Blu is your guy! This six-year-old boy is eager to please, easy to train, walks beautifully on a leash, is potty and crate trained, and works on obedience like a show dog! Blu would do best in a home without young children, and he does startle easily. He came to BDR in rough shape but is well on his road to recovery. Blu is on anxiety medication. His foster mom is spending time working with him, and his progress is remarkable. Blu is a higher energy dog and even a little bit of a trickster! Initially, we thought Blu was wholly deaf; he is hard of hearing, has a ruptured eardrum but can hear some things (including commands).
He does have anxiety which is being treated with trazodone. We saw a behaviorist for this, and it made a small impact. She thinks he may be recently blind and thus the anxiety.
Blu tested well with other dogs at the shelter and has lived with other dogs. He is currently being treated for a skin infection (staph) and has some dental concerns. He is receiving excellent vet care, and he is a favorite among staff at the vet. He handles new situations well and would be a perfect adventure buddy!
He knows:
sit
stay
laydown
wait
walks like a show dog on a leash
has excellent manners (doesn't bark, waits for permission before getting on the couch, has been here 3 months and ZERO accidents in the house or crate)
Does well in the crate
Knows how to run on the treadmill

He is such a good dog! He and I have trained every day and he will make someone very happy.
BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Interested in adopting a BDRA Dog? Simply fill out our application. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative and on heartworm and flea/tick preventive. We ask a $325 adoption fee. This does not begin to cover the vetwork we do on our dogs, which is why we are always fundraising! Keep in mind that Blind Dog Rescue Alliance will transport dogs to their potential adopters. So do not let distance discourage you. The Board of Directors has voted to prohibit the use of Invisible/Electronic fences on Blind Dog Rescue Alliance dogs. This policy will be effective immediately. Please email info@blinddogrescue.com with any questions.

More about this rescue

We are a small group of volunteers spread throughout the United States (and even a couple in Canada) who are dedicated to advocating for blind and visually impaired dogs by rescuing dogs in shelters, helping blind dog owners, and educating the public. We formed in 2009, though our members have many years of experience in rescue, and in blind dogs.
