My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Joe has been working hard in board and train! But look out world because Joe is now looking for his forever home! Joe is currently located near Minneapolis and anyone interested in adopting him will need to go to the fosters home for a meet & greet.

A little background on Joe, he arrived in rescue from Turkey in July 2021. It was discovered that he has a little fear of people coming into his space (home). He will bark and lunge towards the fear. He has been in a board and train and he has been working hard on facing his fears. Joe will is a wonderful dog with his people but he will always need to be managed.

He would do best in a home where there is not a lot of people coming and going - someone with a close-knit group of friends. We could see him going on walks twice a day - or going on a treadmill for a nice walk each day, and then lounging around in a fenced yard while his owner gardens etc.

No children - as each new friend that enters the home will be a trigger for him and he will need to be managed until he gets to know them. He has been good with strangers outside the home but gets nervous and barks/lunges when new people are coming into the home. We just keep him on the leash until he calms down and smells the new person and then he goes back to being sweet as can be.

He should be crated when his family leaves and at night, which is okay because he really loves his crate and considers it his safe space. He should not be allowed on the furniture as this can amplify his belief that his role is to protect the home/his pack.
Joe loves a good belly rub and if you are real lucky you will get to hear him 'woo woo'. His favorite thing to do is nap but don't let him fool you - he needs a good amount of exercise to be his happiest self!

Update:cHere is a little Pupdate on our sweet boy Joe! We have been out and about enjoying the sunshine a lot lately. Joe loves to lay out in the yard and roll around in the grass. Him and our three resident dogs continue to become better friends. They spend all day together and they all adore each other. Joe has taking a special liking to our corgi Finnly and is learning how to do doggie wrestling.

We've been busy taking long walks to our local Dairy Queen where the four pups split an ice cream cone and having pool parties at doggie daycare where his foster mom works. Joe loves to lounge in the kiddy pool and play in the splash pad with all of his doggie friends. He is really good about giving himself a nap time when he gets tired. At home he continues to try and play with our resident cat and his foster mom has spotted them snuggling on the doggie bed.

Joe continues to make progress with having new people visit us in our home and as long as we keep him in a muzzle or on a leash the first few minutes as he is getting to know a new person everything goes great. Joe is such a sweet boy and truly wants to be friends with everyone, he just needs a minute to smell them and meet them calmly so that he can feel safe.

His foster mom has recently discovered that thunderstorms make Joe nervous. As soon as he hears thunder he runs for his kennel. We've taken to covering his kennel with a blanket and playing him some soothing piano music off a speaker and that helps calm him down a lot.

We have also recently discovered that Joe loves fresh veggies so we treat him with the occasional carrot or green bean and he just thinks that is the best thing in the world.

Seeing him now you would never guess the kind of life he lived before coming to the USA from Turkey. He is truly the most special of boys and his foster mom and dad are so proud of him and all of the progress he has made. He truly embodies all of the best qualities of the golden retriever breed. He is a little goofy, extremely loyal, super cuddly, and full of love. We know he is going to make a perfect best friend for his new forever family.

If you are interested in adopting Joe please contact the foster coordinator valerie.paterson@grrow.org and provide a phone number. An adoption application link will be sent to qualified candidates only.
