If only Dr. Dolittle existed, he or she would be busy talking to all these animals in rescues and getting their stories. This would make it much easier for those who want to help, as we'd be able to understand what these creatures endured. Since Dr. Dolittle doesn't exist, it's up to us to surmise their pasts, by their physical conditions and their reactions to humans and other pets. In our case, we do our best to provide immediate care and then find loving, caring homes that often need to help these pups heal.
Such is the case with "Target" who was rescued from deplorable conditions by a dog loving, good samaritan. Target was found tethered to a chain link fence, a 5 foot leash allowing only enough movement to reach a dirty water bowl, a small dog house, and a hollowed out tree stump. It is unknown what or how often she was fed. As far as could be determined, she was like this for about 2-3 weeks. The man who had her said a couple asked him to dog sit and then he never saw them again. According to him, that was maybe 2-3 weeks before our caring friend found her. Although he may have had good intentions, it was apparent that this man was physically unable to care for Target and is often homeless himself. By his admission, he didn't feel any connection to Target and didn't mind if she was taken from him. Her rescuer took her to the vet where it was determined that she is approximately 2-3 years old but there is no way to know what her life was before 3 weeks ago. She was cleaned up, treated for her bites, up to date on vaccines, flea free and was resting comfortably. According to the vet, Target is heartworm positive but otherwise a healthy young girl, her heartworm will be treated by our vets Towne Line Veterinary Group.
She is described as sweet and good with kids and other dogs so far. Unfortunately as much as her rescuer would like to keep her, allergies prevent Target from becoming part of her family.
Perhaps we don't need to know Target's full story. Maybe the fact that she responds well to a warm, clean home, compassionate touch and healing that comes from proper care, is all we need to know. Although we can't change the beginning of her story, we can change the ending.
We always welcome new fosters and foster to adopt homes.
