Thank you for your interest in adopting from Portsmouth Humane! We are often asked specific details about the pets in our care, such as if they get along with dogs, cats or children. Our Animal Care Team (ACT) does its best to learn the preferences of each pet and make recommendations based on our experience and information from the previous home. If you'd like to know more about this, or any of our other pets, we invite you to schedule an appointment to meet them. The ACT can provide you with first-hand information on the personality of the adoptable animals. The ACT will be able to recommend pets that are a good fit for your family, as we recognize that each animal and home is unique. If you currently own a dog, our team will schedule a time for you to bring them in to meet the dog you are interested in adopting. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
In addition to our main shelter, we also have cats and small animals at our satellite location inside the Hilltop PetSmart in VA Beach.
Meet the Pet
Everyone in the household should meet the animal. If adopting a dog, we require that they meet any dog(s) already in the home.
Submit Application
All applicants must be at least 18 years old and provide valid identification.
Approve Application
A staff member will review your application and go over any questions you may have.
Pay Fee
You will receive a receipt, a copy of your contract, and any necessary medical records.
Take the Pet Home
A week after your adoption you will receive a follow-up email to see how your new pet has adjusted and to offer assistance, if needed.
