My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In Winder, GA
Hi friends – my name is Derby, but you can call me Derbs like Foster Mom does!
I was “retired” from a breeding program and surrendered to ASF. I am 5 years old, and a rather short dude, but a solid 50 pounds of muscle. If you like brown eyed, curly haired blue merles, I could be the next man in your life!! I am neutered, up to date on all my vaccines, microchipped, HW negative, and on preventative.

I’m currently hanging out in Northeast Georgia.
At my foster home, I reside with three dog savvy cats. I had never been around cats much, but when I met these three, one hissed at me to say hello and I said “message received catto”. The cats and I do a very nice parallel living thing. I don’t bother them, they don’t bother with me, we can all be huddled around Foster Mom together and we are all just fine. A furever home with cats is just fine by me.

A couple of very important things about me. I am VERY female oriented and not comfortable with males (two or four legged), and I tend to be timid. At my former residence (the breeder) I was retired because the other intact male Aussies kept attacking me – so I got the boot. The result of that experience is a home with a male dog that has a dominating personality would NOT be the right fit for me. My Foster Family has a spayed female Aussie and I was initially intimidated by her, but the longer I am here the more comfortable I get with her. A furever home with a spayed female would work for me.

As far as human males, it’s a mixed bag for me. Foster Dad is always nice to me, and has made a point to hand feed me, give me treats, and take me outside for guy-time. It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s when he uses his stern voice for any reason, I make like a fluffy pancake and hit the floor belly down. With Foster Mom, I am the complete opposite. I follow her everywhere and always stay by her side. A family with a strong female leader would be perfect for me.

How are my manners you ask? Foster Mom says I’m very laid back and have FABULOUS off leash recall. My sit, stay, lay down are spot on. I do walk nicely on a leash with no pulling BUT need some work on not constantly circling the holder of the leash as I protect them. I’ve been left out and about in the house when the family is out. No problems at all. I haven’t been crated at all with the Fosters, but I do appreciate a confined space in the living room where I tuck myself into when I feel I need to. I ride nicely in the car and I like going on off leash walks with Foster Dad or Foster Mom Jr. (we live out in the country where we can take those kinds of walks). I am very gentle when taking offered treats and have no any food aggression. My housemate shoves me out of my food bowl, and I just step back and let her. I tend to startle easily in addition to being timid, so Foster Mom feels it best that my future home does not have small kids. Twelve and up would be best – though if the family is experienced with Aussies kids as young as nine might be okay.

I am currently using a belly band in the house since my neuter was just completed 5/17. We are working on not marking in the house, so the belly band can be retired, now that my career as a stud is done. And, I will go stand by the door when I need to go out, so im ready to say buh-bye to the belly band!
