Senior Gentleman Seeks Companionship for Golden Years

Hi, I’m Rascal, an adorable senior Jack Russell terrier, with all the perks and quirks of the breed. Up until last year I lived with my senior human and my dog brother. My brother and I quarreled a lot after mom died, so now I’ve gone solo. While I am much happier alone, I still have anxiety sometimes. I hate crates and will cry and scream the entire time I’m in one. My foster mom says it’s perfectly safe in there, but I don’t believe her. I’m hoping my new family will be home lots and lots.

Speaking of my new family, I would prefer to be your one and only. I’m very picky about who I spend time with. I actively dislike my big foster sister (80 lbs), and somewhat tolerate the medium sized one (40 lbs). I don’t know anything about cats, but I doubt I’d like them. For that matter, I would probably do better without two-legged siblings either, unless they were old enough to understand that an older fellow likes his space. I know I sound rather cranky, but if you’re a big human, I am all love and affection. I will follow you everywhere, close as a shadow. My favorite place is in your lap or sleeping on top of you like a cat, though I am content to just be near you. I make the best TV watching buddy.

My foster mom says I’m very therapeutic—my warm weight and steady breathing force her to relax. I’m not loud and yappy (unless crated). I go potty outside, do my business, and come back inside when called. And I’m very smart—right now I’m learning to ring a bell to let the humans know I need out. What more could you want from a canine companion? Are you ready to come meet me?

Adoption process

Once your application is received, the application process begins.  We will review your application, check your references, check with your vet (if there are other animals in the household), speak to a landlord (if you rent), and arrange for a home visit.

Submitting an application does not guarantee a specific dog or cat.  We strive to match the personality and needs of our foster dogs and cats to a family who will best fulfill those needs.  If a family is not approved for a particular pet, it does not mean they will not be a good pet owner, it just means that their needs and the needs of the particular pet don’t match. We do not adopt on a “first come, first serve” basis.

Please note that we do not do same day adoptions. If you are applying for a popular animal (such as puppies, small dogs, or special breeds), it can take several days for our volunteers to reach a decision that is best for the animal. We understand that it's difficult to wait, but please don't email us multiple times a day to check on the status of your application. We are a very small group and the same people that are reviewing your application are also replying to hundreds of emails and facebook messages. We are all volunteers and have full time jobs outside of KGARL, so any time spent replying to emails/messages is time we are not reviewing your application.

Once your application is pre-approved (meaning, we don't see any red flags based on our preliminary review of your application), the applicant may be invited to meet their potential family member at a location convenient to the foster family (usually at the King George Petco).  Adoptions will NOT take place at the meet & greet, this is just a chance for us to get to know you and for you to spend time with our animals. After the meet and greet, we will ask that you spend some time thinking over your decision and we will do the same.

After the application review process is complete (meet & greet with animal, home visit, reference/vet checks, background check, etc.), if all is acceptable to both adopter and KGARL and we all agree to move forward, we will schedule a day/time to finalize the adoption. The adopter will be asked to sign the final paperwork and we will collect the adoption fee (cash, check, or paypal are all acceptable).  At this time, you can either pick up your pet, or schedule a time to do so. Adopters will be required to schedule an appointment with their veterinarian of choice within 10 days of taking your new pet home.

  • Lifetime of free advice from KGARL!

Additional adoption info

Thank you for considering a dog or cat from the King George Animal Rescue League. Filling out an application is the first step in our application process. Requirements for adopting puppies Puppies are cute and silly and people love them, but they are a big responsibility. When you adopt a puppy, you are responsible for molding him or her into a well-mannered adult dog. In order to set our puppies up for the best future possible, we have a couple of special requirements for those that want to adopt. First, we require that puppies (under 12 months of age) attend a basic obedience or puppy class within 30 days of being adopted. Socialization and training is extremely important, and learning at a young age will help the puppy grow into a wonderful companion in their new home. One of the biggest reasons that people give for surrendering a pet is obedience issues. Attending a class with your new puppy will make both of your lives easier and will help you bond with your new pack member! Additionally, we require that adopters live within 90 miles of King George, Virginia. The reason for this is that we like to be close to the puppies we adopt out, so if issues arise, we can easily send a volunteer to your home to try to help or lend advice. Adoption process Once your application is received, the application process begins. We will review your application, check your references, check with your vet (if there are other animals in the household), speak to a landlord (if you rent), and arrange for a home visit. Sometimes, due to the distance involved, we will either have another rescue organization do the home visit, or we will accept digital photos of your home (inside and out) and yard, at our discretion.
