My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Copper
Copper is a handsome two year old retriever/hound mix. He is a great dog that sadly has been neglected and/or abused for most of his life. He and his friend, Belle, clung to each other for comfort when they first arrived. With consistent kindness and patience, Copper slowly came out of his shell slowly and is showing us his wonderful and warm personality, but we can see his past has not been kind to him. His friend Belle has been adopted, but our sweet Copper is still waiting.
Copper has a gorgeous red coat, friendly and inquisitive eyes and a handsome face. He’s not an overwhelming presence, but has a quiet and sweet demeanor that he makes you feel good just being around him. He has so much joy just waiting to come out once his confidence grows.
Copper is a gentle boy. He welcomes attention and can’t seem to get enough from people he trusts. Sadly, he still flinches a bit if you reach to pet him too quickly, but he’s learning that he’s not in his old world anymore. He gets a little braver every day. He seems to like other dogs, especially Belle, and we’ll test for kitties. We think Copper would benefit from another gentle and confident dog in the house to help build his confidence and help him learn how to be a dog and how to play like a dog. He’s finally showing us he enjoys his time in the yard. He enjoys the sunshine. And, he loves when Belle is with him. He doesn’t like to go back to his kennel when the day is done though. It seems as if in his past he was forced to stay in one location for fear of being punished if he moved. His curiosity about the outside world is limited.
He accepts every kindness with gratitude and gives back two-fold. Copper will thrive in a quiet family (with no kids or older kids), and one with another dog. His person or family will need to be full of love for him and patient. Copper will need to learn that he won’t be punished for wanting to act like a happy go lucky dog. We expect that as he settles in, he’ll bond hard with his person and will make your life just that much richer for having him in it. He’s a lovely dog that just needs a little time to adjust to a world of kindness.
