My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other dogs in need. Thank you!

6/21/22 Update from Pluto's Foster Mom in CT: Pluto is doing great! He came out of his shell within hours of being at my house. My husband, Matt, could tell that he was eying the couch when he came inside. As soon as I patted on it to invite him up, he jumped up and became the biggest cuddle bug! He wants to be as close to whoever is on the couch as possible and just curls right into them for a belly rub. He is obsessed with his toys and loves having plenty of options to play with at all times; the squeakier, the better. He is also really good at playing catch with his toys outside and is super fast! You can tell he is still very young because he gets mega zoomies and runs around in circles zipping back and forth. He also loves nipping at flies and has already caught a few! He is much more comfortable inside than outside, but he is coming around to being outside. It was really windy over the weekend so he was a little concerned about the noises of the leaves and branches. Also during our walks, any loud car noises concern him. He does great on a leash and much better with a harness on then with the slip lead. He’s a bit hesitant of new people and other dogs initially on walks, but is very curious and I think will get used to it with time.

Pluto hasn’t had any accidents at all in the house. He goes to the bathroom pretty much right away when we go outside if he needs to go. He is a food hound! He LOVES jerky treats and his meal times. I started using a slow feeder bowl for him so that he would slow down a bit and it seems to be working. He is doing well with our dog, Bear, but you can tell he wants to be the center of attention and gets super jealous if Bear is getting attention and butts his head in. He does bark a little if he hears loud noises or someone coming into the house, so he’s a good watch dog. But he is definitely happiest being a couch potato and cuddling up with people and his toys.

We had family over for Father’s Day and a couple friends came to visit to meet him. Initially he is a little shy, but then 2 minutes later after he gets pets from the person he will then be cuddling up with them and he melts their hearts. I think he would do great with someone who works from home or is not working because he craves a lot of attention. I also think he would be an amazing dog with kids. He is such a sweetie pie. If I thought Bear would like having company, I would be a failed foster in a heartbeat! But I can tell Bear is happier as an only child but is tolerating Pluto for now.

Pluto is super photogenic and I love taking pictures of him! I really believe he was uncomfortable at the kennel, because after a couple hours in our house, he became the most outgoing comfortable confident dog. He made it seem like he has been living here his whole life. I think he will transition just as well at his future furever home!

Pluto's Story: What a cutie pie sweet Pluto is! He is estimated to be about 2 years old and is the youngest of the three dogs our rescue took in from the hoarding case. He weighs about 45 lbs and looks like he may be a Golden Retriever/ Cattle Dog mix.

Pluto walks pretty nicely on the leash and has been keeping his kennel clean at the vet's office, where he is being boarded. Cassie, who works at the vet's office shared, "Pluto is very sweet but timid initially and gets a little nervous around new people, dogs, and in new situations. He was friendly to the vet's dog and had no reaction at all to the office cats. He is scared of loud noises like fireworks and the construction that was going on next door, but he is not thunder-phobic. He does not like to be hugged or held but Pluto does like to be petted on his head and down his back - "heavenly," he says! He does well on a leash but gets nervous around new animals that approach him, but is not aggressive. He loves his toys and snacks, and once he gets used to you, he loves you!!"

His advocate at the shelter said Pluto was the first of the dogs to come out of his shell but will likely regress a bit when he moves to his new home situation. This is not uncommon with dogs who have come from backgrounds such as Pluto's. But we have seen time and time again how resilient these dogs are and with time and patience, they adapt and live wonderful lives!

Pluto has been brought up to date on his vaccinations, is micro-chipped, and neutered. He tested negative for heartworm and is now in a foster home in CT. His coat is growing in very nicely now after needing to be shaved. He's a nice boy who deserves a spot on the couch!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
