My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

7/14/22: Little 7 pound Atreyu has gotten himself in trouble again with his biting. He has been returned to the rescue and very narrowly missed possibly getting euthanized for the second time (he was initially taken to Alachua County Animal Services by the adopter. They called us and stated they believed the intent was for Atreyu to be put down). Yes, he can be snippy and he will bite. We have only personally witnessed it once and while with us, it seemed to come from trying to remove him from the couch when he did not want to go. We have not seen any other triggers, other than fear (ie. When the larger dogs try to check him out). However, he's a pretty confident dog for the most part (has had no problem just coming in and trying to take over) He just came back to us yesterday so we will be working with him to understand that biting is not OK. We all know that some chihuahuas can be snippy little dogs to begin with and he's one of them but he is young and we don't feel like he is beyond help. He can be very sweet and loving. If anyone is interested in adopting him, he must go to a home without children. He does ok with other dogs though and a dog who puts him in his place would probably do him good. He wants to establish alpha position so its important to not allow that. We firmly believe in " you don't bite the hand that feeds you"! He's cute and tiny so he has probably gotten away with a lot but he is still a dog and all dogs need boundaries and for bad behavior to have consequences. Being small and cute should never be an excuse to allow bad behavior. Atreyu will be looking for his forever home and preferably that home will have dog experience and be willing to continue to work with him and be fully aware of his issues. Until he finds that, he will remain with us while we try to overcome the biting and turn him into just a sweet and lovable boy.
Atreyu is a 7 pound chihuahua with a big dog attitude. He came into rescue because his dad became homeless. He was taken in by his dad's parents but he ended up biting their teenager and that was the last straw. They were going to put him down because noone wanted the biter dog. He is only alittle over 2 years old so we couldn't let him get put down. Atreyu can be the sweetest pup ever...until he doesn't get his own way. Then, like a spoiled child,he will lash out. Atreyu needs boundaries and to learn that he doesn't rule the roost. He is starting to learn but will need continued work with his new family. Because he will bite, there should be absolutely no children in the home. He does get along well with other dogs (not sure about cats although most cats are probably bigger than he is and could probably easily put him in his place). Atreyu is crate trained and we were told that he is housebroken (we never guarantee that though). We were told he will also use pee pads but prefers to go outside to potty. He can be handled and actually likes affection but whoever adopts him does need to be aware that he can be unpredictable also. He's a mighty pup in a tiny package but who can resist that face?! We do feel that Atreyu will do well in a quiet home where boundaries are established. He really does want to be a lap dog..he just has to learn that it isn't only going to be in his terms though.
Atreyu was vetted on 6/7/22 amd was found to have no issues noted, is heartworm negative. He weighed approx 7 pounds so he is a good traveling and lap dog size for any family. If interested in giving Atreyu his forever home, please submit your interest and your adoption application via email or text ONLY to 352-215-3260 (phone calls will not be answered or returned from this number). Atreyu's adoption fee will be $200 to help cover the cost of his vetting and daily care while with us.
