My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This cutie is Rowlf (the dog) and he is a 4mth old Bernese Mountain Dog/Poodle mix. He is a darling big puppy who has the sweetest, gentle nature and is a total sucky. Rowlf came to us as a result of the burst of the covid puppy buying bubble….the puppy mills and backyard breeders for profit kept breeding but puppy buyers have fallen off which led to overstock. So an entire litter of pups was surrendered to rescues as they were unwanted. It’s a sad statement of our society that puppies can be overstock items. What we can tell you is that Rowlf (and his littermates that we have) is very much wanted and we love him dearly! We know that there will be a perfect person or family for him that has always wanted a Bernadoodle but didn’t want to support the puppy mill industry and to you, thank you so very much and keep reading as this puppy is fabulous!

Rowlf is going to grow to be a big boy so a home with some space to accommodate him will be required. He has large paws and a solid frame. We don’t know what his full grown size will be but can expect at least 70lbs so his future family needs to be prepared for and wanting a large dog. We need to be clear that Rowlf has more of the Bernese mountain dog fur and as such does shed and is NOT hypoallergenic or suitable for those with allergies to dogs. He is fluffy and soft and very huggable. He will require regular brushing and will be more of a high maintenance coat type. Rowlf likes all forms of attention so grooming sessions are quite fine with him. Rowlf has a soft nature about him and is a super sweet puppy. He does piddle though at times as he gets a bit unsure when you come to get him. We feel he had some rough handling when he was in the puppy mill and as such he gets a bit unsure at times. This will get better as he grows and matures but for now anyone interested in Rowlf needs to be patient with this and not get upset or frustrated if he piddles. He can’t help it; he is just a baby with a soft temperament. And honestly, it’s just a bit of pee and it’s not all the time…comes with puppyhood, but having a pup with a darling nature makes up for it!

Rowlf is being fostered with other dogs and he loves the company of them. He would love to have another dog in the home with him. Ideally if that dog would enjoy cuddles at nap time Rowlf would like that. Rowlf really prefers to sleep cuddled up with another dog. Again, a testament to his sweet cuddly nature. Not all dogs enjoy another dog invading their personal space when sleeping though so you will have to determine if your dog would enjoy a fluffy puppy lying next to them on the same bed or not. If there are not other dogs in his forever home then Rowlf would need his people to spend a lot of time with him and cuddle him. Rowlf is fine with the cats in the foster home and doesn’t pester them too much. Rowlf would also be suitable in a home with gentle natured children. Rambunctious, loud and rowdy children would be too much for him but quieter natured children who would play with him and pet him would be a great fit. He does have sharp puppy teeth and likes to jump up so that will have to be taken into account, but with parents who are experienced dog handlers and who will actively supervise the puppy/child interactions we feel that Rowlf would be an ideal family dog.

Rowlf is a smart pup and is food motivated so training is going well. He is crate trained and is working on his house training. Supervision is key and he has to be taken out many, many times in the day. He can hold it overnight though and sleeps through the night without issue. Rowlf can be left for up to 4hrs at time right now but cannot be expected to hold it for a full 8hr plus workday so will need to have a person or family who is home more than away right now. Rowlf is also being trained with some basic commands and is an avid student who will do well in his dog school classes and make you proud.

We really can’t say enough nice things about Rowlf. He is such a fun and happy and friendly puppy. He has only dug up one of the outdoor planters (so far) so we call that a puppy win. He loves to have fun and play and then settle in with some cuddle time. He is learning leash walks and getting braver by the day but we take it slow and don’t overwhelm him. He really feeds off of the confidence of our dogs so again, having another dog in the home to show him the ropes of how to “dog” would be ideal. He will be the perfect puppy for anyone wanting a Bernadoodle and who has the time and attention to focus on a puppy right now and for his formative first many months in a new home. If your summer schedule doesn’t include vacations away and you have the time to invest in the training and socialization of a puppy then this may be the perfect puppy for you.
