My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Say hello to Mako! This amazing one year old Xoloitzcuintli pup is so much fun! He had open chest surgery at 7 months old, and would not have survived without it. He is doing great post-surgery and the vet tells us it's like he never had surgery at all. If you are looking for a dog who loves adventure, he's your boy! He loves going to the beach, was perfectly behaved on rock hounding trips and rides beautifully in the car. He is high energy and needs an active home. He is too rough with small dogs so he cannot go to a home that has them. He loves all dogs, but he doesn't know his own strength and wants them to play with him, but he scares them because of his size and persistence. He loves dogs though, so a home with a dog his size (currently 30 lbs) or just a little bit bigger would be ideal as he would love to have someone to run around and rough house with. He also cannot go to a home with children under 12 for the same reason. He jumps on you (working on it!) and is tall and strong. We don't know how he would do with cats but he would likely be persistent in trying to get them to play with him and due to his size, would not be the best match, so a home with no cats is also required. His tail never stops wagging, and he wants to play with toys allll day long! He is very loving and sweet. He adores having the top of his head kissed, and wants to be with you at all times. He is extremely smart and learns quickly. He loves going for long walks and playing fetch with his ball in the fenced yard so he can get some of his puppy energy out. He doesn't seem to have a prey drive, as he sees all kinds of animals on his walks and he is curious and interested but just watches them and doesn't try to chase. He also lives with birds and guinea pigs in his foster home and will go to the cages and wag his tail and watch them quietly. He is not much of a barker, although he will occasionally decide something in the house is terribly scary, such as the orchid plant on the window sill! He will bark at it when he sees it for a few days, then decide it's fine. Otherwise, he will only share his big deep bark if there is something out of the ordinary. The other dogs in his foster home will sometimes run to the window and bark but he will not join in until he goes to investigate with them and decide if there is something he should alert to. So he is a good watch dog without being a nuisance barker. He is not a candidate for apartment living. Due to his age, breed and energy level, he needs a home where someone is around the majority of the time. PLEASE research this breed before applying. You can find info on them on our Breed Info page (scroll to the bottom of that page on our website). They are a primitive breed and can be challenging due to their intelligence, energy and stubbornness. They are not for first time dog owners and need a family that will be firm, fair, kind and consistent in their training. Please make sure that you can meet all of the stated requirements, as we are getting lots of applications from homes with little dogs, little kids, etc. We evaluate our foster dogs thoroughly to ensure they find the absolute best match for a successful future and will not consider applications that are not a good fit for him. Mako can only be adopted within New England. Please do not apply or inquire if you are not in New England. We will not respond to inquiries outside of this area.
