My story

Up for adoption in Texas and New England Xocolotl Luv, aka Cocoa.

This 11-week-old, 15-pound beauty is quite a star.

Lucky Lab raced to her rescue earlier this summer when an animal shelter in Texas posted her in urgent need because she had horribly burnt paw pads. Her tiny feet were bright red. She could only walk on her tiptoes. Then television star, actress, and animal lover Mayim Bialik posted about Cocoa on social media when Lucky Lab created a Waggle fundraising campaign for her care.

But now Cocoa is all healed up and ready for her forever home. Her foster mom tells us:

Cocoa is a friendly, happy, and playful puppy. She loves to play—especially tug. She’s interested in balls but mostly just plays with them by herself. She likes to be close to her people but doesn’t need to be on top of you all the time. She’s good at playing with her toys by herself. She’s very much a puppy in that she is exploring the world with her mouth—she puts her mouth on everything! When she’s sleepy, she loves to crash close to her people so she can get snuggles and pets.

Cocoa has become BFFs with the resident 10-month-old kitten. They rough house and play a lot.

She gets along well with adult dogs, but she is a puppy and needs supervision because she will get on their nerves.
Cocoa is in the mouthy puppy stage and will need someone willing to be patient and train her. She can be hardheaded but learns very quickly.

She is about 75% housebroken. She is also crated trained and stays in her crate when she’s home alone for short periods of time.

She loves everyone she has met. We will not adopt her to a home with small children, she has sharp puppy teeth and claws. She has been around older, well-behaved kids, we’d recommend a home with children at least 12 years and up.

She has good recall and loves to play with balls and toss them around by herself. She is treat motivated and likes to please her people.

Cocoa is a snuggle bug and a snorer. She has age-appropriate vaccines, and she’s microchipped.

Lucky Lab will require anyone who adopts her to enroll in a positive reinforcement puppy training class and do additional training with her and provide the rescue with proof. The puppy classes are a blast!

Why adoption is a great option

Cocoa, a Brattleboro Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed (Small) dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed (Small) for sale in Brattleboro, or seeking a Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed (Small) dog from a breeder in Brattleboro.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Brattleboro already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Brattleboro breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed (Small) breeders who help with Labrador Retriever/Mixed Breed (Small) rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Brattleboro paves the way for another one to be saved.
