My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Here is a question for you. What was the real name of the dog who played Rin Tin Tin in the 1950s TV show? You guessed it, BLAZE! I wonder if I could become a world famous wonder dog, also? I share the same name. I, too, am a handsome German Shepherd mixed with perhaps some Australian Kelpie. My coat is shiny black with a white BLAZE on my chest and white on my paws and the tip of my tail. The vet thinks that I am around 1 to 3 years old. I currently weigh 82 pounds, but could afford to lose about 5 pounds. I am eating weight management food. Personally, I think I was managing my food and treat intake before just fine. I may be slightly overweight due to lack of exercise. I was surrendered to a county animal shelter in Southern Indiana on July 5, 2022- no more Independence Day for me! My owner, that had to give me up, was an elderly gentleman. He had to use a cane to navigate and he could no longer keep up with me. My foster mom has two steady feet and finds that I am a handful for her. She can only imagine the low number of walks I have had. Now when I go out for jaunts, I am wearing a prong collar and am learning to be much more respectful. I would love to practice my leash skills with you.

With the name BLAZE, you can imagine the fiery attitude I have. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of direction and training so I have become a stubborn, strong willed teenager. My foster family with Rover Rescue is working diligently to install good manners in a loving environment. They think that I may have been disciplined previously with a heavy hand (or cane). I don't cower in fear, but definitely have a lack of trust of especially men. I can be pretty defiant when I know that something is expected of me that I don't want to do. Did I mention that I am a teenager? I like to do things in my own time like coming into the house after being outside or going in my crate. I am not highly food or treat motivated so I can be a challenge. I am also extremely intelligent so I don't fall for the same "trick" twice. Positive training is going to be vital for me. Honestly, I am not a dog for a first time pet owner and breed experience is going to be beneficial.

I have a ton of positive attributes. I am housebroken and my foster mom appreciates that greatly. I have not been destructive in the house. I do enjoy the well stocked toy basket. Squeaky toys are the best and I am not a big de-stuffer. I get along well with the other two dogs in the house that are both male. I take reprimands very well from the grumpy resident golden retriever. He tells me not so kindly that he isn't interested in my puppy like antics. I give him space, but it doesn't mean that I don't keep trying. My foster sibling is a 4 month old puppy. I love to rumble and tumble and play rough with him. The pup will tell me if I get too overzealous and I will listen for a short time. Then it is game on again. I would love to have a fur mate that likes to play hard in my furever home. A human playmate would be great, also, but one with some age (12+) would be best. I can still be jumpy when excited and I would hate to knock someone down. I would thrive with an active family. A fenced in yard is a must as I love to lie in the yard and look out on my domain. I will alert you of any activity going on, but am not a nuisance barker.

If you are looking for a loyal and affectionate companion, please call about me, BLAZE! My foster's mom home phone number is 630/406-9405. She will gladly answer any of your questions and will have a few for you also. My adoption fee is $225.
