My story

Please welcomie Kayden to the SSR pack. Kayden came up from Texas on transport last week and steadily has been learning the house rules. You see, Kayden found himself in a shelter in the Rio Grande Valley as a stray, and it’s not clear that he has ever lived in a home before.
All that aside, Kayden has been a pretty good houseguest! He has discovered dog beds and sofas are very comfy to sleep on. He thinks eating on the regular is awesome. He thinks squeaky toys are super fun. He thinks the occasional shoe is for munching. He definitely now understands the word ”no”.
Kayden is:
*about eight months old (his paperwork says 12 months but he appears younger, about eight months)
*currently about 50 lbs. and based on his feet likely to be on the smaller size when full grown (60-65 lbs.)
*heartworn negative!
*people, kid, and dog friendly
*cat friendly (though he chases and wrestles with the resident cat in his foster home but has shown zero prey drive toward her)
*crate trained
*not completely housebroken yet, but very close
*clever and eager to please
Kayden would do great with another dog in the house, though it’s not an absolute necessity. He does enjoy the company of other dogs, and continued socialization is highly recommended. He currently knows only limited commands, and his leash manners need work, so training must be on the agenda for a potential adopter.
If Kayden sounds like to guy for you, please reach out to your caseworker to learn more about him.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

The first step to adopt one of our dogs is to complete an adoption application. Once you have submitted your application, a volunteer with call your personal and veterinary references. Following references, SSR will send out a volunteer to conduct a home visit and meet any members of your household. We come to your home and further discuss the adoption process. The adoption application will let us know a little bit about you, your home, your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a companion. Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to fill out our application to adopt one of our dogs. Your application will either be accepted or denied after the volunteer submits a home visit report. ADOPTION FEES There is a non-refundable application fee of $15. Our adoption fee is $300 for dogs aged 6 and under. Our adoption fee is $225 for dogs 7 and up.

More about this rescue

Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue is an all-volunteer rescue focused primarily on the rescue of German Shepherds. We are based out of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, but expand our reach and work to save German Shepherds in heavily populated areas throughout the country. While our rescue is a new organization, our volunteers have been rescuing German Shepherds for many years. Our hope is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome every German Shepherd in need.
