My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Nessa!!
Nessa is believed to be a 4 to 5 years young APBT staff shire terrier mix. What people call a low rider. What we do know is this. She is extraordinary amazingly awesome and damn near perfection. She will trap you with her soulful eyes and work you like a puppet. Despite her history of abuse and being used as a target bait dog, she is remarkable with all and every dog met. She is motherly and nurturing and without other dogs even if her human was with her 24/7 she still misses them. It's within her nature to be with a pack. Nessa has been exposed to and lived with many dogs big and small and done well always. She too is ok with cats and does terrific with children of all ages as young as 1-year-old. Walks perfectly on a leash, and depending on the person her recall is spot on. Now let's discuss her emotional dramatic skilled methods to charm humans. She offers belly-ups to all and anyone who she can sucker into falling for the pity me look, love me, I need loving performance. She will pull your heartstrings. Draw you in and by now she owns you. 😆 it's too late! You have been pitbull owned. You've been "Nessa" and now follow through by offering "the look" to gain control of your actions, she will have you babying her and in no time treating her like a princess. Your sole purpose of spoiling & babying her as she gets what she wants from you and does as she pleases. IT'S TOO LATE! Her well-executed strategic played-out plan worked. No way of going back. When done so all of the above she is confident she has gained complete control and her dramatization magnitude is increased even more. Foraging all the self-pity look glazing you with her soulful eyes to sucker you in even more. It's a matter of time before she will gain the throne. 🤣 You have been captured but what we call Pitbull Love.

Nessa was one we rescued out of state when we assisted on a transport leg to empty a high-kill shelter. She was the only one left without rescue due to her history of abuse and was used as a bait dog. It was clear she would require a lot of rehabilitation and as well as medical for her body to heal from the continued trauma. And even more so her mind.

Nessa succeeded in rehabilitation training and now become outgoing, a bit shy sometimes but you wouldn't know it, happy, friendly, and loves all she meets! Nessa is a nurturer, a sweet soul who healed by allowing us to help her become the dog she was always meant to be. The first year was not easy. Her fear threat of dogs was obvious. Survival was prominent in her mind. But her love allowed her to place trust in us and that's how she relearned and gain confidence with dogs. Once she knew she was safe at the sanctuary the rest just followed and made her rehabilitation training straightforward. She always found comforting someone, human or animal. She is an all-size dog, cat, rabbit, bird, flock, and human as well as children as young as a year old sociable.

Upon arrival we noticed she needed medical attention, her skin was full of open wounds and bite marks, fresh and old. All different stages of healing indicate continued prolonged abuse. She was also heartworm positive and had an old open fracture wound that barely healed and had done so wrong on her right front metacarpal. No words to even begin to comprehend how any human could be capable of such evil.

Today she runs, plays, and loves life. She is happy too. She is healthy, negative for the heart-worm disease, and oh so ready for her happy forever life to take off. Nessa is perfection and true to the breed. Loves toys, treats, and training, and the leg fractures healed but she has to learn to live with what's left of it.

Nessa is active and able to walk without intervention. This beautiful forgiving soul deserves the best forever home!

Nessa is house and crate trained but needs a routine schedule when in any new environment, current to date on all appropriate core vaccines including lepto & corona, 1 or 3-year rabies, dewormed, fecal tested negative, microchipped including free registration for life, spay/neutered, heartworm & lyme diseases tested negative upon adoption,   and on monthly heartworm flea/tick prevention.

Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense. We do NOT ship and meet and greet are required before adoption unless you are a previous adopter.

Previous adopters of AHS have the first choice and are not expected to pay another adoption fee again.  Donation of their choice is welcomed.

Training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily. New issues and opportunities arise daily that have to be addressed and or rewarded. Continued training is a must.

Adoption process information can be found on our website

The Adoption Fee of $285 covers all of the above and everyday needs/care.

We are a foster-based all-volunteer program. We are not a government shelter facility nor are we open to the public. Our adoption process can take 2 to 3 weeks from the time you mail it in to the time that we reach out to you. If you are window shopping we are not the rescue for you. We are seeking committed adopters.

More about this rescue

Every animal in our care comes to us with their own story. Many of them have had it harder than others, and have scars that need a healing touch. What they all have in common, is that they came to us from other rescues/shelters that felt they couldn’t take on their individual needs, and give them the necessary care needed to help them bloom into family pets. Most pets we welcome into our program, need extensive behavior and/or medical care before they are ready for their forever homes. We provide each pet with an unlimited amount of time to recover, along with individualized care and training customized to there needs.

We at Animal House Sanctuary love a challenge and have a soft spot for these special pets in need. Most of all, we love seeing each individual pet change into the family pet they were always meant to be. Watching this firsthand, is beyond rewarding and fills us with a joy that cannot be described in words.

We are a 501(c) Licensed Nonprofit organization that is ran 100% by Volunteers. Our mission is to help homeless animals find great forever homes. Our heart is with the community, helping families keep their pets at home. We are involved with informing our local community about the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. We also help feed the homeless and their pets. Senior pets are precious and dear to our hearts which is why we are involved with the Hospice Heaven program. This consists of pulling older cats and dogs from high kill shelters and placing them in a loving home. This often includes matching senior pets with a Senior Adaptor. Sharing joy and respect for all precious life is something that we love doing, and will continue to do, for it fills our hearts.
