NOT a Rainbow DogThis is Dewey. Dewey is a 2 year old Irish Wolfhound Mix. A neutered male. He is house broken, knows basic commands. He is current on vaccines and on flea/tick prevention. True to his dominant breed he is very calm, docile, owner loyal and gently loving in his nature. This is the perfect dog for people who know the Irish Wolfhound breed, and love them for their calm, laid back temperament, but may by put off by their size. Dewey looks very much like a Irish Wolfhound without the giant size. It is his size that leads us to know he is a mix. The rest of him, his behavior, temperament, and gentle nature are all true to the breed. An ancient breed of dog known as the 'Castle dogs' because they used to lay around the castle in what ever room the rest of the family was in and this is what makes them happy. I have been fostering Dewey since shortly after rescue and he is totally devoted. He will be this way to his new caregivers as well.
Dewey comes to rescue as a result of some of the worst neglect I have ever seen in rescue. He would have rivaled anything you may seen on Animal Cops. As a result of his neglectful former life, Dewey may end up a special needs dog. We still do not know yet. Dewey is currently blind. 3 weeks ago he could see, so this is a new issue for him. His ophthalmologist holds out that he may get his eyesight back as he continues to get healthier and healthier everyday. Dewey is a very easy dog to care for. I too was worried about the 'extra work' caring for a blind dog might be. I have since been corrected by a very smart dog. He is the easiest dog I have ever had the pleasure of caring for. Dewey has already learned a command that keeps him from running into things in the yard. Say the command and he stops changes direction and continues on his way. Dewey continues to be cared for by his vets. He is on the road to recovery and while the verdict about his eyesight is still up in the air, otherwise he will be fully recovered , hale and hearty, ready for his new home by the end of August or the first of September.
