My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We all have scars, and we all have stories. If Winks could talk, we're sure he'd have quite a story to tell. But we can only hypothesize why Winks, who is only one year old, has the scars he does. But we do know despite his past, his bright happy spirit shines through each day. He hopes his forever family will be the gems he's been waiting for and deserves.

Winks is deaf. He also has some facial atrophy that makes his left eye look a bit droopy. Our veterinarians believe the atrophy is caused by some sort of trauma or injury Winks endured before we saved him. We don't know if he was hit by a car or even hit or beaten because he can't hear and wasn't responsive to someone's commands. The injury is healed, and it doesn't slow Winks down, but his eye will likely remain looking like he's winking at you. We think he's adorable!

Despite being deaf, our volunteers report that Winks does very well in new situations. He has been to doggie daycare and appears to get along well with people and dogs of all sizes.

Winks will need a home with an experienced dog owner. If someone uses sign language or has experience with a deaf dog -- that would be a bonus.

Wait a minute, hang on here, Winks just told us he wants to show you all how smart he is -- he says:

"Let me introduce myself: I'm Winks and I'm looking for my fur-ever family! When my foster mom saved me from the shelter, I was so happy that I couldn't leave her side. I may look a little different, but that doesn't bother me, and I'm already back to being the rambunctious, inquisitive dog I was always meant to be!

My foster family discovered early on that I'm a very special boy who can't hear, but that doesn't stop me from being the sweetest of dogs. I'm currently working with a trainer who's helping me learn to communicate with my human and doggie friends. She says I'm so, so smart, and learn quickly, and she will continue working with my new family and me so that we can communicate with each other.

My foster dad says I'm vocal and I'm an active dog that still acts like a puppy, so I ask that you have patience with me. I love kids, but I can play rough, so older kids suit me best. And please make sure I have another canine brother or sister to play with. I could play all day if you let me! I'm a friendly dog and love every new person I meet. I'm working on my leash skills, and I'm very treat motivated. I also love chew toys- just make sure they are durable!

I would love to be part of your family!"

Winks weighs 70 lbs. He is vaccinated, neutered, house and crate trained, and microchipped. To apply for Winks go to www.luckylabrescue.com
