My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dear Hit & Run Driver,
You ran over me with your car in Clearfield on/near 1000 East around March 27. Your tire crushed and severed my rear leg, cut off my tail and mangled my hind end so badly even the doctor couldn't tell if I'm a boy or a girl without x-rays. I'm about 5 months old. I may be small and hard to see, but after you hit me- why didn't you stop to help me?? I was in a LOT of PAIN!! Other drivers passed by, they didn't care enough to stop either.

I didn't lay in the road and feel sorry for myself for very long. I dragged my broken body out of the street and found a safe place to lay down. I tried to find my way back home, but I was lost. I was hurting, cold, hungry, thirsty and most of all, I was lonely and scared.

My cries for help were heard at last! I was found by a young boy and girl who cared enough to get help for me! They gently carried me door to door asking if anyone knew me, no one did. One woman answered her door, looked at me and said, "Not my cat, not my problem!", then she slammed the door. The children took me home to their mother, who could see I needed a lot of help very fast. She cared about me, too! She called vets, but it was 11pm and they want a lot of money to help critters that late at night. The family wanted to find help for me very much, so they went online and searched for a cat rescue... they found the Feline Foundation of Utah and called...

Nice people answered the phone, they raced from Ogden to Clearfield as fast as they could. They took me to their shelter where they cleaned my ugly wounds, gave me antibiotic and loved on me until the vet was open in the morning. I was very lovable, stretching my neck to give them wet nose-kisses and holding their fingers with my paws, even while they cleaned my wounds. I was a luvbug all night!

My new friends took me to Murray the next morning to the best vet they know who helps rescues. He thought I might be too damaged to save, but wanted to try. He also said my injury happened 5 to 7 days before I was found! I carried my dead leg all those days and suffered pain beyond words while my wounds became severely infected. No one knows how I survived. The nice doctor amputated my leg and tail stub, patched me up and kept me a few nights in the hospital where I got lots of IV fluids, antibiotics and love.

My rescuers took me back to their shelter where I'm in a giant kennel with blankets, pillows, soft bed, lots of toys, all my favorite foods, clean water, medicines, regular wound treatment and bandage changes... but most of all, I know I'M LOVED!!!! I'm a talker, so I tell them all the time how much I love them and how thankful I am! I'm in excellent spirits, as I have been since the first night I was found. I'm recovering so well! I'll even walk on my 3 legs if someone comes to the front of my kennel to visit me! I love to purr while someone scratches my head.

The sad news is I'll have surgery again on Tuesday, the doctor needs me to heal before he can complete my procedure. He needs to amputate the rest of my leg at the hip joint. I should be ok after that.

The happy news is I've been adopted! A nice lady fell in love with me and wants to love me forever after I'm healed enough to go home. She visits me a lot and brings me gifts like treats and catnip mice, and she's helping pay for my huge vet bill. She'll keep me indoors only, right where I belong. I love to nuzzle with her and purr! I'll nuzzle with anyone who takes a minute to pet my head and say Hi! I'm glad to know there are a few nice people out there who really DO CARE...otherwise, I wouldn't be here right now.

So you see, Careless Driver, I may be down for awhile, but I'm not out!
Love,
Billie Jean =^..^=
