My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jane aka Ellarra is a strikingly beautiful brindle gal who is 4 1/2 years old and weighs 60 pounds. She was adopted but unfortunately is being returned to find an adult-only, no cats home that can meet her energy requirements.

Just like their human family members, animals have many sides to them.  Some of these sides are good and some are not so great.  In spite of the not-so-great, everyone deserves a chance. Jane is no exception to the rule.

Don't let her size and her bark fool you. Jane is a very sweet and happy dog who loves most people. Hey, we don't love everybody we meet so why should she be expected to?  For those that she does like, Jane submissively drops to the ground to be pet. She loves to be around her friends and has been known to snuggle when she is relaxed and settled in.

Jane has great house manners in that she is potty trained and always goes to the bathroom outside. However, her leash skills definitely need some work.  She is very strong and pulls quite hard to go after squirrels, cats, birds, and sometimes other dogs. Jane likes some dogs, and doesn't like others. If you have an escape proof yard, that's even better! A fenced yard, with a 100% escape proof fence, would be the best place for her to run and get out her pent up energy. We think Jane would be excellent at agility training as she does enjoy training and is very fast and agile.

Have you ever heard of the term "sharing is caring?" This is something we always say to little kids, but Jane hasn't completely bought into it.  She has possession issues of particular items and locations.  Jane needs to be fed separately from other animals.  If given a high-level value treat, it is necessary to have her in a quiet location, away from others. The great thing about Jane is she is crate trained and enjoys the security and comfort of her space in her crate.

Despite her flaws, Jane really is a beautiful and kind dog.  Yes, she has some quirks and some undesirable behaviors, but she does have a kind heart and wants to please her people.  She needs a calm, adult household without other pets. Jane would do best in a quiet home with a spacious yard where she can run and play. Most of all, she needs a patient, dog-experienced family who has the time and compassion to let her be herself while helping her understand that she is safe.

If you are interested in meeting Jane aka Ellarra, please go to and submit an adoption application. Be sure to mention her name!

More about this rescue

In many areas of the country, especially in the South, the situation for animals is desperate: Chained outside and starving, homeless and running loose, or just simply no longer wanted and abandoned in an overburdened and underfunded facility that can’t possibly take another. For these animals, there is not much hope…except to look in the night sky for the North Star, their only way out. We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to saving these innocent dogs and finding them a new forever home. NorthStar Pet Rescue was founded in 2017, and although we might be a relatively new name among New Jersey animal rescues, you may recognize some of us from the work we’ve done volunteering with other rescues to help animals over the past decade. We are 100% dedicated to operating in an safe, transparent, and ethical manner and to ensuring the best veterinary practices are followed with regards to the care and transport of our animals. NorthStar Pet Rescue is IRS 501(c)(3) charitable organization (EIN: 81-5348036).
