My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I am leaving for Iraq in mid-January and I am desperately in need of a home or foster for “Jack”. Jack is an ADBA registered 7 month old brindle/white male. I adopted Jack because he was born with a congenital spinal deformity resulting in partial paralysis and was scheduled to be euthanized. His condition is in flux – we have days where he hardly seems to notice, and days when he drags his back end a bit. He has not used a wheelchair since he was 12 weeks and is great with a belly strap for assistance on walks. He may need a wheelchair long term, but for now retains a lot of motion in the rear legs. I have had Jack vaccinated, neutered, & microchipped. He is mostly housebroken, but sometimes it is hard to get outside when your legs don’t cooperate. He is a very smart boy who likes to play and talks to you constantly.

I really don’t know what to do with Jack due to his breed, handicap, etc. It is hard to find a home for a healthy pit bull, let alone one with spinal issues. We were not due to re-deploy for at least another year, but things have changed rapidly and I am in a jam. I am beside myself with worry – if I don’t find a home for Jack soon, I will have no choice but to euthanize him. I will not turn him in to a shelter where he will be considered “unadoptable” and euthanized anyway.

The situation is complicated by the recent BSL here in Aurora, CO. It means that I can’t place him in a local home. Denver also has a breed ban and there are three other cities in the area which are due to put it to a vote. My mother and my ex-husband are each taking one of my other rescue doggies but neither of them is in a position to adequately care for Jack with his special needs. I have exhausted all resources and message boards on the internet, and made contact with local rescue groups to no avail. I have tried to utilize military pet foster programs, but a partially paralyzed pit bull is a hard sell and most do not accept pets under 12 months for foster.

I am scheduled to take my final leave in Oregon on December 20 through 29. This will be my only chance to transport Jack prior to deployment. Please be aware that I am willing to provide financial support if someone will foster him. As young as he is, I think finding him a new home would be best. Our deployment timeline is 22 months total, so a foster would have him longer than I have!!! I would gladly reclaim Jack upon my return if no home is found.

I can email photos, transport him to a new home - anything. I will be building a flier tonight for distribution tomorrow. Any help, publicity, or suggestions in finding a home or foster for Jack would be greatly appreciated. I love him and want to do what is best for this great little dog.

If you can foster or adopt this puppy please contact Heidi right away at: 303-859-2206 or send an email to heidi.tufto@co.ngb.army.mil
