Additional adoption info

Our adoption donation is $15.00 for the first rat and $10.00 for each additional rat adopted at the same time.

In the cases of older rats that have become bonded to their cagemates, if you are willing to adopt them to keep them together as a family, we do not ask any adoption donation after the third rat in the group ($35.00 would be the maximum.)

We require an adoption application be filled out, and once approved, you must sign an adoption contract. All approved adopters receive an adopter's kit containing a rat food sample, brochure, rat toy, area pet directory, water bottle and rat hammock as well as other goodies!

WE ARE NOT A PUBLIC SHELTER. We do not have hours or a single location. We are a network of private homes that volunteer to foster rats until they are adopted. You cannot come visit all of the rats before adoption since they are in varied locations. To save time for both you and us, we require that anyone going to a foster home to see/adopt rats must be pre-approved first.

We also provide new adopters with assorted rat care brochures and a list of area veterinarians who are rat-friendly.

More about this rescue

PHILLY RAT RESCUE was established in 2012 to serve the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding communities. We take in single and paired rats from private individuals, "free" ads on Craigslist and Freecycle and from abandonment or abuse situations. We do not normally take rats in from animal shelters or hoarding situations because we are not equipped to handle large groups of rats. We were founded to save the rats in most urgent need of rescuing. Most of the time, we take rats in for genuinely urgent reasons only. If we have space, we will take rats from non-emergency situations.

Shortly after PHILLY RAT RESCUE was founded, we also established the ST FRANCIS RAT SANCTUARY for elderly, disabled and terminally ill rats in danger of being abandoned or given away as snake food. They live out their golden months with our foster moms, in peace, safety and comfort, receiving any veterinary care they may need. Due to space, our rescue and sanctuary are both limited admission.

PHILLY RAT RESCUE is more than just a rat rescue. We also exist to act as advocates for the well-being and safety of domestic rats everywhere. This means at times we will take public positions on issues which impact domestic rats.

We also serve as a referral agency for the times when our foster homes are full. We will refer surrenderers to other reputable rescues and shelters in these cases.

We also can help if you are in need of a pet sitter for rats, either for a short business trip or a long vacation! If you need rat sitting, please ask us, we have members who are very experienced in rat care and would be happy to help!

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ADOPT ONLY TO THOSE LIVING IN PHILADELPHIA, THE PHILADELPHIA SUBURBS, AND CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY. You must live no more than 50 miles from Philadelphia, PA to adopt from us, unless you are a past, approved adopter who has since moved away from this area.

BEFORE INQUIRING, PLEASE READ ADOPTABLE PET ENTRIES CAREFULLY. IN MOST CASES THE INFO YOU NEED ON THE RATS IS CONTAINED THERE. WE USUALLY HAVE NO FURTHER INFO ON THE RATS IN QUESTION. Please email prradopt@gmail.com for an adoption application for any rats you may be interested in.
