Marco is a beautiful Red Heeler mix with lots of interest in herding whatever there is to herd. He is a dog that would do best in a single-dog family as he is not interested in the companionship of other dogs, cats or children.
Marco will soon be ready for his forever home!! He is currently in a board and train program with Specialty Dog Training here in Oceanside, CA and in the ideal world, he would transition from his training program directly into his new adoptive home. His board and train program includes lessons for his new owners so here is a great opportunity to adopt a dog who has several weeks of intensive training AND additional lessons for his new humans to help get “them on board” with the training as well!
According to his trainer, this handsome guy is your typical cattle dog – intelligent, energetic, loyal to his human(s), can be wary of strangers and not necessarily concerned about building a group of canine friends. Marco will thrive with a breed savvy owner who is looking for good- looking, canine partner to share life with. Going to dog parks or lying under the table at a café is not something Marco would enjoy but a moderately strenuous hike or a learning a new activity like scent training would be right up his alley!
As with all cattle dogs, solid leadership from his human and a daily routine with structure will help Marco live his best life. He has been gaining confidence each week in his training program as he learns new skills and understands what is being ask of him. While his trainer believes he could co-exist with another dog, he seems to be selective in his choice of canine friends. We have not seen him around children but unless the home is very breed savvy, we would not recommend a home with children. Marco appreciates his space and children typically do not understand this concept well.
If you are interested in adopting a dog with the mind of a rocket scientist and exceptionally good looks, Marco could be the one for you. He is currently reviewing applications so please click below and submit yours today if you'd like to come meet him.

Additional adoption info
The first step in the adoption process is an application. We also ask for a letter of recommendation from a current or past veterinarian you have used for any other animals you have or have had in the past. This letter is basically the doctor recommending you to adopt based on your history of taking good medical care of your animals.
If you rent, we ask for proof that you are allowed to have a dog in your home. That's it paperwork-wise. Then we can work to find the dog that is the perfect fit for your family. If you do not have a vet that you have used in the recent past, no problem! We will schedule a home visit.
The adoption fee is a donation of your choice with a minimum of $250.
Your pet has been spayed/neutered and will come with a full medical history as best as we can give. When the dogs come to us they see a vet right away for an intake exam so we know as much as possible regarding their current health. They are given vaccines and we take blood, fecal, and urine to send to the lab to look for any other health issues that we can treat.

More about this rescue
Last Chance at Life is an all-breed rescue and adoption organization. We have a special fondness for Boxers, birds, and ANY pet in need of medical care. We take in animals from all over San Diego County. Our rescues come to us from local shelters and humane societies, owners who can no longer properly care for them, and through other rescue groups. Most often these animals are facing euthanasia because of medical or behavioral needs. Because of this, we are truly their “Last Chance at Life.”
Some of our pets are in foster homes, and others are cared for at our Adoption Center in Oceanside, CA.
All of our pets receive the very best in medical care from the doctors and staff at Mission Animal and Bird Hospital. The entire team is very committed to offering care to our pets in need and no short cuts are ever taken because these are rescue pets. Visit Mission Animal and Bird Hospital.
