Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.
If you are looking for that big, goofy, loveable, affectionate Dane who thinks he is as big as a Chihuahua, then boy oh boy, have you hit the mark with this guy. Meet Kato!
This attention hound is cuddly and playful. He does with okay other resident dogs but he is not so fond of unfamiliar ones. He also has energy and playfulness out the wazoo and can be too much for small dogs and may annoy the older ones. Even when another dog shows aggression towards him and wants to stop playing, Kato may not pick up on the cues and continues to want to play.
Kato also loves toys. If you are up for a game of tug of war, so is he! One of his favorite games is “Demolish the Rope” and wowzers he excels at it. He also loves being given yummy, chewable treats, especially large bones. And he loves to suck on blankets so his foster dad got his very own blanket just for him.
But as much as this fella likes to play, he also likes to rest. There isn’t a flat piece of furniture in the house that he wouldn’t mind snuggling up on. And he does appreciate when his foster pawrents let him sleep in their bed with them. He is a great cuddler.
Is brushing a dog therapeutic and relaxing for you? Great news! Kato loves it! Brush away on this fella. He won’t stop ya!
Kato does prefer his owners to be home most of the day with him. He can have some separation anxiety and should not be left unsupervised for any extended amount of time. However, the kennel is not his favorite place to be. He typically needs convincing that he is not in trouble and that the kennel is not a punishment for him. He is potty trained.
He does have Stranger Danger, especially towards men when they enter the house. Slow and controlled introductions are best, and a no-kid, no-cat, low-traffic home is needed.
His foster fam is working on leash training with him as he can be tuggy. This is a work in progress. Kato does respond to some basic commands (treats are helpful!) He is a curious fella and can get distracted easily during training, though. If a door to the outside is left open, he will go explore the neighborhood.
Kato needs a Dane experienced owner who can provide him with structure. He has a big ol heart and is just itching to get into a forever home with owners that can take the time and energy needed to train him and teach him all the wonderful ways to be a “great” Dane.
All of our Great Danes are altered, if medically possible, fully vetted, micro-chipped, and on heartworm prevention or treatment prior to being adopted. Thank you for considering adopting a rescue dog, you're saving a life when you adopt.

More about this rescue
To rescue Great Danes from neglect, abuse, and abandonment while providing medical care and individual rehabilitation through our experienced and loving foster home program until we are able to provide each rescued Dane with a qualified, caring, and permanent home that will ensure a good quality of life they deserve.
To assist owners that cannot afford spaying, neutering or heartworm treatment as funds allow while also educating owners on affordable, local spay/neuter clinics, spay/neuter benefits, vaccinations, backyard breeding, behavior, nutrition, and obedience. Additionally, we want to be a link point to other rescues and clubs. Raising awareness around rescues and the Great Dane breed is of great importance to us.
We have been rescuing Great Danes since 2011 and we take pride in the collective love, concern, and dedication we have given to the misunderstood and forgotten Danes. It is our mission to continue to be the voices of the less fortunate Danes and to provide them safety and their birthright to a quality of life filled with love and dignity. You can help us achieve our mission by donating funds, items from our wishlist, items of relevance, your time through volunteering, or by lending your home as a foster.
