My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Napoleon is looking for a foster home. Can you help? http://magdrl.org/fostering.htm
Napoleon is a 10 month old partially deaf merlequin male with natural ears. His family moved out and left him and his 9 year old St. Bernard brother in the house alone, with only 2 visits daily for food and to go outside. When his St. brother was picked up 3 days before he came into rescue himself, Napoleon had a tough time of it. Initially a happy, trusting boy, when we picked him up he was very anxious and distrustful. That soon changed, however, as he settled into boarding at a local vet clinic. He is up to date on shots and will be neutered before the week is out. Napoleon lived with children and does well with them, although it will be up to him if he responds well to new children in rescue. He chases cats and will not be placed with them. He lived with a male St. Bernard and was best buds with him, but did play roughly and is picky about the dogs he likes. Slow intros to other dogs are needed, although we suspect he'll really need a canine companion. When he is anxious, Napoleon uses his mouth and grabs at hands/arms to communicate. He has no training whatsoever, and does not have a clue how to behave. However, he is housetrained, courtesy of his canine brother. He will need someone to work with him using positive training and rewards to show him how to behave. This pup has had a hard life so far, but he's still very young and can be a great dane! This diamond in the rough could be a great dog with just a little work and a strong bond with a strong person. Won't you give this puppy a chance? Napoleon came to MAGDRL in April 2010.

pdate 5/8/10 - Napoleon is doing well at the vet office where he is being kenneled. He is friendly with the vet techs and vets there, and is quite the office favorite! He has shown none of the hard mouthing behavior that had us concerned when he was brought in. He is fine with larger dogs but not smaller. He is no cats. Due to his behavior when stressed, we won't place him with children. He would do great with an active couple or single person who can bring him places and work with him. He's a sweet affectionate boy who loves to snuggle and can hardly wait for a family to call him own.
Update 6/18/10 - I met Napoleon this week and what a cutey pie he is! He's a typical teenager who is actually fairly calm, provided he gets regular exercise. When he doesn't know what to do or get worried, he uses his mouth to communicate, so he will put his mouth on your arm to let you know he's overwhelmed or unsure. He doesn't hurt you, just doesn't know what to do. He is the perfect dog to teach to fetch a stuffie so that he chews on that when he's nervous or anxious. When meeting new dogs, Napoleon is obnoxious and rude! He goes right into the other dog's space, quickly and uses his mouth, again, to communicate. Not all dogs are fond of this approach, so introductions should be slow and long walks are encouraged. Napoleon would probably do best with another canine companion who is oblivious to his rude ways and plays with him and shows him the way to handle things. Napoleon really needs a home to love him and give him a safe, understandable routine. He can be a great dog for the right person or family!
