This beautiful mare is Jasmine.
Jazzy came to us as an owner surrender when her family wasn't able to take care of her any more. Her past is mostly a mystery. Her family hadn't known much about her history when they got her and we haven't been able to figure out too much more. We were told that she was about 15 years old, but after examining her teeth, it seems much more likely that she's closer to 25.
We believe she is a Standardbred who used to race, but we don't know for sure. She is tattooed, but unfortunately her tattoo is impossible to read so we can't look up her race record. From what we know, after her harness racing career, she bounced around from owner to owner for a while before being purchased by her most recent family as a riding horse for their daughter. However, the daughter had issues getting Jazz to canter and wasn't riding her as much as the family anticipated.
Since Jazz has been with us, it's become obvious that she's a horse who's been in pain for quite a while without getting any of the treatment that she needed and that is why she was having such issues picking up the canter. We started with joint injections to make her more comfortable, and when those didn't help as much as we were anticipated, we also had her tested for Lyme's Disease. When the results came back positive, we made the decision to stop riding her and to offer her as a companion horse instead.
She also has some allergies that get worse in the summer, but she tolerates all of her fly gear like an absolute champ and looks adorable in it!
Jazzy can be a sassy ol' gal when she wants to be, so she needs a family who has a little bit of experience, but once she trusts you, she's got a stunning personality and she's a great companion horse. So far, she's gotten along with every horse we've tried her with!

Anyone interested in adopting a pet from us should first fill out our online application! From there we are excited to set up an appointment for you to meet your potential new best friend. If it is a love connection we will set up an adoption date where a home visit is also conducted.
We require at least 2 personal references and a home visit. Depending on circumstances a vet reference or landlord reference will also be requested.

Wayward Ranch was founded by three friends who, after working for other rescues for a long time, realized there was something missing from the average rescue model. No animal is perfect, and in the typical shelter system any behavioral concerns an animal had coming in are just exacerbated the longer they are kenneled or caged waiting for a home.
Many local shelters have taken to shipping puppies up from the south because they are more “adoptable” than the shelter animals we have here. However, this just floods are market and takes homes and resources from our local animals who are suffering as a result.
We are committed to a different type of rescue experience. We are a unique combination of adoption and sanctuary facility, taking the pressure of euthanasia away from animals who may not be generically adoptable. We also help our animals thrive, rather than deteriorate, as they wait for forever homes using a combination of enrichment and training techniques.
