My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Guinness von Gunzach is a gorgeous, 2-year-old, fluffy Shepherd-mix. This handsome, fluffy boy comes out of his kennel still a bit unsure, so during his outings he prefers to stay close to you – with great leash manners - and even explore a bit once comfortable. Like the gentleman he is, Guinness shows his consummate skills at doggie group-walks, where he seamlessly blends in with a fairly large group of his furry-peers. At this point, our handsome boy appears to need a bit of time to settle in, preferring to first become comfortable with you before he “graduates” you to the canine pinnacle stage: petting. Once comfortable, however, he leans on you for attention and follows you everywhere. This smart cookie has a relaxing, medium-energy level, knows “Sit” and “Down” and takes treats gently. Guinness is proving himself quite adept at socializing in playgroups, which he enters with a happy and explore-to-your-heart’s-desire attitude. He meets the other furry-partiers with a wagging tail and invites them all to play. Then a remarkable thing happens: he comes over to where you are and starts bouncing around you. The message is unmistakable: “I like doggies, but I like my humans even more. So play with me!” Interestingly, he only does that when other dogs are around – maybe it’s a way of showing them who really take precedence in his heart? This fluffy beauty is one step away – an application – from becoming your very own. He informed us that he approved of his resume but wanted to make sure we include a note to the effect that he isn’t interested in making kitty-friends.

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
