My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please welcome Bruce to the 4 PAWS family! He came to us in August 2022 from a local animal control; he was part of a hoarding case. Bruce has been with us learning how to be a dog and gain confidence. He is a 5-year-old, neutered Pomeranian mix weighing 23 lbs. He is being fostered with other dogs, cats, and he doesn’t like the fast movements of children so his new home should have no kids. His foster does not crate him, he is housebroken, will mark in the first few days, and his foster is socializing him (he can be picky with who he likes). Bruce MUST have a fenced-in yard, he is too skittish and is still learning to walk on a leash. Bruce will take time to adjust to a new home and family but the time and patience will be worth the wait. He is not a dog for a first-time dog owner. Bruce's family needs to understand that he is a lifetime commitment, they must also be committed to daily exercise, continued training, and socialization.

If you are interested in adoption; DO NOT CALL, please complete an online application on 4 Paws Animal Rescue's website at www.4pawz.org. We verify the care of past/current pets. Our goal is to have the very best home for all our dogs and cats, and therefore, we reserve the right to approve or deny an application based on what we determine is in the pet's best interest.

Additional adoption info

4 Paws Animal Rescue’s goal is to place homeless dogs into loving homes and families. We take special care to match the right home with the right dog, ensuring a lifetime of love for both the pet and the adopter. Our adoption process may seem time consuming or unnecessarily complicated, but please understand that we have our dogs’ best interests at heart. We strive to find the best homes possible for our dogs, as well as find the right dog for you and your lifestyle.

When you are ready to adopt a new friend, we'll ask you to complete our friendly screening process, which ensures safe and successful adoptions!

We'll have a brief conversation with you to determine your needs and preferences, find out about your daily schedule, and talk about your previous experience with pets.
1. Fill out an Adoption Questionnaire.
2. If applicable, we'll call your veterinarian to ensure that previous pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well cared for.
3. For renters, we'll check with your landlord to ensure that dogs are permitted and that the dog that you're adopting wouldn't violate any size or breed restrictions.
4. We'll visit your home to see the environment where the dog will live and answer your questions.
5. Lastly, we will go over and complete an adoption contract with you.

Please understand that our organization is completely run by unpaid volunteers, who dedicate their free time to help the dogs. If your references are unavailable, it will delay the process, since those must be checked before moving forward. The entire adoption process takes time; we are unwilling to sacrifice being thorough when the dog’s future is at stake. We thank you for your time and patience throughout our adoption process.

4 Paws Animal Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We do not receive government funding or grants and therefore rely heavily on our adoption fees. Our adoption fees are set to allow us to cover our expenses as well as to help other animals in our program that require additional care. Our fees cover vetting costs (including spay/neuter surgery for all dogs over 6 months of age, DHLPP shots, rabies shots, and de-worming), shelter fees, fuel for transport, copying and printing of contracts and paperwork, our website presence, food, boarding, behavioral training and additional medical care. It is important to note that while the animal you adopt may not require all of these things, many other animals in our system do. Thus, any “extra” money from adoption fees goes to help those animals who may require additional care. By adopting from 4 Paws, you are not saving just one life, you are helping to save others as well.

The estimated adoption fee is provided below:
Puppy (6 months and under) - $300
Young/Adult Dog (7 months to 9 yrs) - $150-250
Senior dog (10 years and older) - $50 - $150
Cat - $50

We accept cash or credit payments for adoption fees. There will be an additional fee for credit payments of $10.00.

More about this rescue

Our Mission
4 Paws Animal Rescue specializes in the rescue and placement of abused, unwanted and abandoned companion animals. We never discriminate on the basis of health, age or breed. By involving and educating the community, 4 Paws Animal Rescue works to raise the public's awareness of the plight of homeless animals as well as realizing the benefits of adopting an animal in need. Our animals are examined, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and receive any and all medical treatment before they are placed in carefully screened homes. We are a non profit 501c3.

4 Paws Animal Rescue is a pet rescue group that is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) volunteer-based animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters. By working with a network of volunteer advocates, foster caregivers, local veterinarians, trainers and shelters, 4 Paws Animal Rescue is able to rescue hundreds of animals every year. We provide these animals with care and temporary homes until we can place them into their permanent homes. We also serve as a resource to our community by providing information on pet ownership, including resources for spay/neuter, positive behavior training, nutrition and veterinary care. We believe that no animal should be mistreated and are working towards the day when no companion animal is euthanized for lack of a home.

4 Paws Animal Rescue was founded in 2015 by a family of animal advocates in Gloucester, VA after learning that the area had been inundated with stray and relinquished animals. 4 Paws Animal Rescue formed to rescue as many stray and homeless animals as possible by partnering with Gloucester Matthews Humane Society (GMHS). In addition to transferring homeless animals from GMHS, fostering the animals in temporary homes and adopting them out, we also provide behavioral and medical resources to people who are considering surrendering their pet in an effort to keep the pets in their homes and out of the shelter system. We also have partnered with Petco, which provides us with six cat cages at their facility in Williamsburg, VA.
