My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Asher, our soulful, enigmatic boy is looking to make a deep connection and bond with someone who is ready to get to know him on the deepest level. As a man of mystery... playful at times but sometimes serious too, affectionate on occasion but independent and self-reliant when comfortable...he will be a fine partner and teacher for the dog-experienced person ready to take their education to the next level. The task of peeling back Asher’s many layers to watch him blossom and bond might take a little time but will ultimately be intensely rewarding to the person he’s meant for.

Asher is whip-smart, athletic, and quite charming. Once he has opened-up, the fun begins. He loves to work, practicing and learning cues. He loves to patrol, working a perimeter perhaps to keep coyotes away. He loves to rest, enjoying a nice sunbath and watching the birds. But, his favorite thing is to PLAY! This guy will fetch a ball until the sun sets!

He has been thriving with his current routine that includes all of the above, but that wasn't always the case. We've worked with him on diminishing resource guarding (food), fear related to people encroaching in his personal space, and miscommunication issues. He has continued to mend and excel in the process and he is now ready to find the person who can provide him with a lifestyle and partnership where he will continue to grow and allow him to be his happiest self.

Asher’s perfect home would be with one or two dog-experienced adults who offer a gentle touch, a predictable routine, and respect for his independent nature. He’ll need a home with regular indoor/outdoor access for him to use as he pleases. Don’t be surprised if he spends most of his time outside in his yard. Besides learning, patrolling, sunbathing, and playing, he walks nicely on leash and loves to hike and swim!

Our talented training team is on board to help Asher's new partnership with you thrive, providing assistance and guidance on adjusting Asher to his new home and surroundings. All aboard!

More about this rescue

We are a national training center for search and rescue dogs where we professionally train and then pair talented dogs with fire department handlers at no cost to them. Dogs that do not continue with search dog training (for a variety of reasons) are career changed or available for adoption into pet homes as part of our Lifetime Care Program. This program ensures that once rescued, these dogs never need to be rescued again.

Once we find an adoptive family for our extraordinary dogs, we train the canine and the family, stay in touch with the household, and act as the dog’s advocate for life, making sure that he or she is receiving excellent care in a happy, healthy environment.

The program ensures that every dog in the SDF family has a wonderful life and is in no risk of re-entering the shelter system. This is SDF’s unwavering commitment.
