My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Pretty River is looking for her forever home, and being a special girl, she needs a special home! Could it be with you?

River is a Maremma livestock guardian dog, meaning she loves to be outdoors during the day, overseeing the safety of her territory. She also lives with global fears, probably instilled while she was living as a stray in early 2022. With this combination, River needs a quiet, rural home and a quiet life; young children or a busy household are not preferred. River’s fears make her a flight risk, so a fenced area is necessary for her safety. If your property has trails to hike, she will be very happy and loves to explore at the end of a long waist tether. She enjoys the company of other dogs, and a confident companion dog will be a great help to River as she adapts to a new home and routine. Though she loves to be outside, River also loves lounging on the couch and chewing a bone or playing with a toy. She currently lives with cats in her foster home and occasionally tries to herd them but is not aggressive. River is small for a Maremma Sheepdog at 60 pounds, which means she is too small to live with animals as their fulltime guardian and fight predators.

River and her foster mom have been working with a trainer to reduce her fears. She has made good progress but may lose a little ground temporarily when she moves. Any time remaining on her trainer contract will go with her to her new home. At this time, River is not a dog who will be comfortable joining your camping trip or visits to dog parks or coffee shops. She may grow into social activities, but it’s not something we can promise. She will bond tightly to her family and love them in her unique way, but it will probably take some time for that trust to grow. With love and patience, River will become a wonderful addition to your life.
