My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Coco is a very energetic 4 year old girl who loves to play fetch, and shakes her toys and growls at them. She’s never had another animal friend her size to play with, so doesn’t quite know what to think when her Shih Tzu foster siblings try to play with her. She’s a beauty, weighing about 9 pounds and is gray with silky soft hair. Coco loves laying on the back of the couch, as it gives her the best view of the house. She’s very alert to her surroundings, and no squirrel or unexpected person will ever sneak up on you again. Her foster parents work from home offices, so she’s learning about quiet time. Coco's favorite spot is near you, preferably on you. She may even try to sit on your lap before you’ve fully sat down. Once she attaches, you’ll never be alone again. She will follow you to the ends of the earth…and the bathroom. She’s really come out of her shell since first arriving in her foster home, and it’s hard to believe this spunky, affectionate little girl is the same dog that came into rescue just a few weeks ago.
Coco will need an experienced owner who can continue to work with her on some behavioral issues. Much of her life was with an elderly couple during COVID, and she needs socialization. She exhibits some barking when protecting her household from critters or strangers and needs help curbing this behavior. Also, she is quite fearful of men, and barks at her foster dad, especially if left alone with him. She may have had negative experiences with men in the past, and her new family will need to help her trust men and overcome this fear, especially if there is a man in the family. The man must be exceedingly patient and understanding to help Coco trust and attach to a male family member. She loves to be outside for walks and being accompanied outside in the yard, which is a good foundation for building trust.
Coco wants very much to please you and should be easy to train. She’s working on potty training and is doing very well. She was pad trained in her previous home but is now learning to go outside instead. Her new family must continue with her outside potty training and understand that there will be some accidents until she acclimates to her new home and knows what is expected of her.
Coco would do best with a family where there is someone home most of the time. She will do okay with another small dog or where she is the only dog.

Coco is looking for her forever home. In order to ensure that, here are the requirements that her foster mom requires for her new family:
• Coco is a young and very energetic 4 year old who needs lots of physical exercise. She needs a family who is home most of the day, yet physically active, taking her on long daily walks, playing fetch, and running in the yard. A fenced back yard would be great as she loves to run, but is not mandatory. An active family who will include her in their daily physical activities would be ideal.
• Coco needs a family who is experienced with training and socializing dogs and who will commit to her continued training.
• Any man in Coco’s life will need to be patient with her and actively help her overcome her fear of men.
• Coco can be in a home with another small dogs. She would also do well as an only dog, as long as she has opportunities to socialize with other dogs on walks or other family activities.
• She will definitely want to sleep in bed with her new family as she loves to be close. During her first couple of weeks with you, her family must be prepared to let her out in the middle of the night to go potty but once she gets the routine down she’s good, however the first thing she wants to do in the morning is go out.
• Coco’s new family should live within 30 miles of Roseville, MN and will commit to attending the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each year in September.
We understand there are quite a few requirements for Coco’s new family. But if you meet the requirements, you’ll have the adoration of this cute funny girl who will want nothing more than your love and attention and maybe a bite of your dinner.

Coco is spayed, current on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Her adoption fee is $370. 00 plus $27.84 in sales tax for a total of $397.84.

To meet Coco, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
