My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This cheerful, friendly little gentleman is just easy to have around! Calm and relaxed while he's alone, he's immediately ready for a good time when his people come home - whether that's an outing, a session of zoomies and play in the yard, or snuggling on the couch.

HISTORY
In April of this year, Scrappy showed up at the Tri-Cities shelter with a horrible infected wound caused by a DIY neuter surgery. The shelter got him back on his feet, then asked HART to take him in so he could recuperate in a comfortable foster home. He has recovered fully, and has revealed himself to be a charming, friendly, forgiving little dog.

Scrappy is in a foster home in Kennewick, Eastern Washington.

SOCIALIZATION
This calm, confident little fellow adapted quickly to his foster home. He picks up on house rules and routines right away.

He is quick to make friends with people of all shapes and sizes, and would probably enjoy sharing his home with kind, playful older kids. While he is good with small children, he's probably not a fit for a family with very young children because of his size.

There are no other dogs in Scrappy's foster home, but he enjoys going for playdates with the pack of tinies next door. He may bark when he encounters new dogs, but quickly settles down and gets on well with dogs that are playful and polite.

He is very interested in the cats that sometimes wander into the yard, and will try to chase them. We think he would probably be fine sharing a home with a confident, dog-savvy cat.

TEMPERAMENT AND BEHAVIOR
Full disclosure: Scrappy is a major-league attention hog - and if he feels he's being ignored, he'll let you know about it! He needs humans who will enjoy engaging with him - whether they're playing or cuddling. But he's not unreasonable about it; when one-on-one time is over, he's content to settle down and let you get on with the boring business of being human.

He loves to cuddle! Your lap is Scrappy's safe place - and he's also very content just to snuggle up close on the couch and share a Netflix binge!

But this dog is no couch potato. He's an energetic little guy who needs a good daily workout, and would be a great fit for an active family He loves to play fetch and run zoomies in the backyard. Walks are fun - he'd probably be a great hiking companion - although he expects you to respect his need to sniff and/or pee on any and all significant bushes, boulders and blades of grass. Being small, however, he's also pretty good at exercising indoors - playing parkour on the furniture, zooming down the passage after a ball, or just bouncing with his squeaky toys.

That said, when there's nothing going on, Scrappy is pretty good at kicking back and doing nothing. His fosters work a full day and they can check up on him via the cameras set up in their home. He spends the day snoozing on the couch and never does anything you wouldn't want him to do.

He's alert, and although he's not one for endless yapping, he will bark if he hears a strange noise or if a stranger comes to the door or passes his fence. However, although he's good at letting his people know something needs their attention, he's never shown any sign of aggression.

TRAINING
Scrappy usually comes when called - and if he doesn't respond promptly to a call, he'll come running at top speed if you squeak one of his toys. He walks well on a leash. Apart from that he doesn't know any obedience commands - but he's young enough to learn the basics, if you want to teach him. He'd probably love to accompany you to school!

His house manners are excellent. He has never had an accident in his foster home, and will wait all day to be let out to do his business. He hasn't been crate trained as far as we know because it really isn't necessary - he's not destructive or badly behaved in any way. He calmly accepts the need for baths and showers, and enjoys being brushed.

HEALTH STATUS
Scrappy has fully recovered from his neuter ordeal, with no negative effects. He is fully vaccinated and microchipped, and appears to be in excellent health. He weighs a healthy 10 lbs, and based on the vet's estimate of his age we've assigned him a birthday on April 15, 2019.

ADOPTION
Scrappy's foster home is in Kennewick, Eastern Washington. We have posted him with a Woodinville address in an effort to expose him to a wider range of potential adopters - because this delightful little dog deserves the very best home! We will be happy to arrange an introduction as soon as your adoption application has been approved.
