My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ava
YOU MUST HAVE AN APPROVED APPLICATION IN ORDER TO MEET OUR PETS.

Ava found herself in a rural county shelter, hoping she would go home again, when her elderly pet parents were no longer able to take care of themselves or their beloved pet. Her human mom and dad received the help they needed and are now in a facility. Now sweet Ava needs help finding a great new home for herself!

Ava is 5 years old and up to date on vaccinations. She will be spayed as soon as she has lost enough weight so that the surgery is safe for her. (We guess you probably noticed she is a pretty chunky girl!)

We have not idea what breed mix this cutie is, maybe a little yellow Lab? Maybe some Aussie? Maybe a touch of Corgi? She does not have a tail.

Ava is very sweet and friendly, loves belly rubs and recently started playing with a few toys.

We were told that she rode around with her humans everywhere and it surely seems that way. She is always ready for whatever is next and simply adores being with her family.

Ava is fully house trained and does not have any accidents.

She already knows several commands and tricks! She knows sit, shake, down, roll over and speak. She is very eager to please.

She loves to go on walks and actually runs around the yard. She is surprisingly agile, fast and energetic for a big girl so will probably have plenty of healthy energy for fun stuff once she reaches a more trim weight.

We have been taking it slow, so as not to over do it, but she enjoys activity and this will help her get back in shape.

She is good on the leash, pulling just a little at first in excitement and then walking nicely.

We have not had her around little kids but she is used to living with elderly people so probably better in a home without wild toddlers running around.

She has been fine with older, well mannered children.

Ava would be happiest as an only pet. She truly wants to be the center of attention and wants to be your sidekick in whatever you are doing or wherever you are going. That is what she is used to and she really loves that lifestyle.

However, she might be accepting of another calm dog her size in her new home that mostly ignored her.

She pretty much ignores the other dogs in her foster home but does not care to have other dogs in her face and will tell them to back off. She probably would be overwhelmed by settings like doggie daycare since she can get anxious with too many dogs around. She has not been cat tested.

As you can see, she is quite overweight. We can only guess that maybe she was mostly fed people food, as she is not overly excited about her dog food meals and is quite finicky. She has already lost a bit of weight in her current foster home and is breathing much better now!! It will be important that her new family forever practice portion control with her meals and treats.

We will be doing a weigh in soon to see how much she has lost. When she first came into rescue, she was 85 pounds! The vet thinks she should probably be around 45-50 pounds (that is why we selected “medium” as her petfinder weight category). We are working to help her get to her perfect weight so she can safely be spayed.

She is now available for foster to adopt as we will require her to be spayed (after she loses more weight) to be formally adopted. She is really an exceptional girl and ready to become a devoted member of your family!
