My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Foster update: We have had Bart several months now and he has been a sponge learning new things. Bart has learned commands like sit, stay, release, go potty and we are working on others. Bart is an active 8 month old who loves to play outside and fetch. He will fetch all day if you let him. Bart is potty trained and has been doing great with free roam in the house while we are not home. Bart is a typical older puppy and can get a little mouthy when excited or if food is involved, but he responds quickly to correction. He gets along great with other dogs and cats. This love bug loves to get in your lap and cuddle. Bart is a really smart dog and picks up on new things really fast. Bart would do best with an active family who likes to take their pup for runs, hikes, long walks and would enjoy tagging along to social activities like hanging out at a brewery, restaurant, etc. Bart just wants to be with you any time he can.

We have had Bart for almost 2 weeks and he has been great thus far. He is a handsome boy with precious ears and tons of personality. Bart absolutely loves to play, which is expected being 4.5 months old. He runs around the house with his favorite toys in his mouth, just squeaking away and it is too cute. He loves playing with balls, sunbathing in the yard, and hanging out with his foster fur siblings. We tried to get him in a kiddie pool over Memorial Day Weekend, but he wasn’t totally sure about it. We’ll give it another try though! Bart has only had a couple accidents in the house, both of which were when he first got here, so we’d say he is basically potty trained. He has learned how to “sit” and will do just about anything for a treat. We work from home so Bart has full range of the house while we work. He does well entertaining himself with toys and chews in between the occasional nap. Bart sleeps in a crate in our bedroom at night without a peep and when morning rolls around he is ready to go. He is also an excellent couch cuddle buddy, just FYI.

More about this rescue

Labrador Friends of the South (LFS) is an incorporated, non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of homeless Labrador Retrievers in the Southeast region. We are 501(c)(3) status.

LFS relies solely on donations, fundraising events and adoption fees to function and continue saving and placing homeless Labradors. We do not receive any state or federal funding. LFS is an all volunteer organization of people who give their time, effort, and love to protect the breed from the perils of pet over-population and irresponsible pet ownership. Our ultimate goal is to help these dogs find new, loving, forever homes.

The Labradors in our program receive veterinary care and temperament testing before being eligible for adoption. Since our goal is to place our Labradors in forever homes, we consider each Labrador’s history (if any), temperament, training and other skills, and energy level. We then assess each adopting family’s preferences, home environment, lifestyle, and personality in order to make the best possible match for a successful adoption.

Labrador Retrievers and Labrador Retriever mixes are the most popular family pets in the country. Unfortunately, this statistic means that they are the most likely to end up in the animal shelters as strays or unwanted pets. Perfectly healthy, sweet- tempered Labs are put to sleep everyday, sometimes without the benefit of a painless euthanasia drug, simply because there are not enough good homes for them.

We believe that there is a misconception that these Labs and Lab mixes have behavioral problems or extensive health issues that caused their owner's rejection. The truth is that the vast majority of these dogs find themselves suddenly abandoned by their owners and the only family and home they have ever known. This often happens because their owners lacked compassion or education about being a good, responsible pet owners. Sometimes these homeless pets are victims of unlucky circumstances or tragic events that caused them to become separated from loving families.

Please open your heart and your home to a Lab who needs your help. They will show you their appreciation with lots of tail wags, body wiggles and kisses. No matter the circumstances of their past, these homeless Labs are likely to bond completely and deeply with their new caretakers and make wonderfully affectionate and loyal companions for the rest of their lives.
