My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In Salida, CO - My name is Atau (Ah-tay-you) and I am a very special girl looking for a very special furever home. I am a deaf dog who loves my foster humans with all my heart. I am a very smart dog, I love the outdoors, especially the smells and I am eager to please. I am just under 2 years old.

I need a very special family with enough love and patience to continue my training and help me learn this thing called life. I wasn’t properly socialized during my first couple years of life, so I didn’t get to learn the things that puppies get to learn…like the feeling of gentle raindrops on my back or not to chase cars.

My foster mom has taught me so much in a short period of time because I am such a smart girl. I need a family that will help me reach the tremendous potential that I have. Oh, my foster mom says that I can’t overstate just how much progress I have made in the short 3 months I have been with them.

While I play and take walks with one of my foster sisters, I am sometimes reactive/aggressive with other dogs, but continued medication and training will probably help me get over this with time. I am already showing signs of improvement. I would really like to chase the cats, but foster mom is teaching me that I can’t really do that. I will need to be the only animal in my furever house. I would also do best with older kids because I am a strong dog and I sometimes forget my strength.

I love to be active, and I love to be around my humans as much as possible. If you are the very special family I am looking for, I would love to meet you.

More about this rescue

Nancy Gonzalez, founder and CEO, created Australian Shepherds Furever (ASF), a non-profit organization to promote the educated adoption and rescue of the Australian Shepherd (Aussie) dog breed.

In July of 2012, ASF initiated as a Facebook page hoping to have 1,000 user "likes" by the end one year. The page quickly outgrew expectations, now with a network of nearly 72,000 individuals striving to provide aid and refuge to Aussies all over the country.

Using the Facebook page as a platform, the website www.australianshepherdsfurever.org was developed as an additional resource aimed at educating the public on this intelligent and beautiful breed. It provides resources for those seeking help, or those willing to contribute to the Adopt, Save, Foster (ASF) philosophy. Through this philosophy, ASF has saved the lives of countless dogs and helped to provide assistance to those that have nowhere else to turn.

We as humans have a responsibility to speak up and take action in favor of those beings that are less fortunate. Thanks to a team of passionate and proactive volunteers, Aussies nationwide are given a chance at a better life through Australian Shepherds Furever.
