My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Perry's Backstory:
Perry was found by Animal Saints as an owner surrender at animal control. He had been tied to someone’s porch by a rope and left without a note. This person tried to take care of him for a month, showing their care through overfeeding. Because of Perry’s food insecurities, he ate dried kibble as comfort and company while he spent that month alone in a room. Now, he’s a few pounds overweight. Thankfully, we were asked to help rescue him and find him the stellar home that he deserves.

Breed and Hair Notes:
Perry has hair that grows and not fur. He is a handsome Shih Tzu gent. Because he arrived terribly matted, he had to be shaved down. His hair will not stay this length, and it will grow indefinitely. PLEASE NOTE: Perry will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.

Get to Know Perry:
Perry is approximately 3-5 years old and about 18-20 pounds at his ideal weight. He is up-to-date on his vaccines. He is neutered and has been taught to go potty indoors on potty pads. He goes outside during walks, too. Perry LOVES his walks and looking forward to them every single day! Please plan on walking with him as he needs this for his physical and mental health. If you are not able to give this to him, please do not apply.

Perry is described as a “very sweet dog” by his foster family. He is very affectionate and makes us laugh. He has some fear issues, based on his past, and will bark if he feels scared. He was severely traumatized before going into his foster home, but he is recovering so well. His recovery has been much faster than expected by all of us, which is a good sign that he will transition well in his new home. He just needs to be given the patience and space to trust fully after having humans fail him in the past. Professional training is necessary and ideal in order for Perry to truly flourish and deepen your trust and connection with him.

Ideal Home:
Perry will do best in a home where someone works from home or is retired. All he wants is to be with his family and trust humans for the first time in his life! He is a companion animal in every sense of the word, and he would not do well in a home where his people are gone most of the day.

If you expect to put Perry in a crate at all during the day or night, please do not apply. Perry will flourish in a home where he can hang out with his people during the day and sleep with them at night.

Perry can successfully be in a home where he is the only dog. He lives in a foster home with multiple dogs, and he can also be in a home with other patient and calm dogs, as well as cats.

Does Perry make you smile like he does all of us? If so, we look forward to receiving your adoption application!
