My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/.

Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit.

Introducing Floyd!
We received an email from a local shelter about a stray dog who was timestamped for 6 pm that night for medical issues. They said he couldn’t walk well, or bear much weight in his hind legs. When he did walk, he circled, so they were concerned about something neurological. In addition, he seemed to be in a lot of pain. They didn’t hold out much hope for him, and we didn’t know if we could help him, but we wanted to give him a chance.

We brought him straight to our vet, who didn’t find anything really wrong! His back is arched-arthritis, birth defect? We aren’t sure. But it doesn’t stop him! He walks, and sometimes runs, without a problem! Often dogs are so terrified and shut down at the shelter, it’s hard to know what they’re really like. We were so glad to see a different dog than he was in the shelter.

His only health issue is low thyroid levels, and he takes a half a pill twice a day for that. They cost under $10 a month. He also was neutered and had a dental while with us. He is a tiny peanut, around 5 ½ pounds. We are guessing he’s around 12 years old, but it’s hard to know for sure. As for breed, we are guessing yorkie/pom mix? No clue, we just know he’s adorable! We did do a DNA test on him, and can’t wait to see what that says!!

Floyd is a bit of a nervous guy, and he always will be. When you go to pick him up, he kind of slides to the floor. But he’ll let you carry him everywhere! He’ll chase after you, especially at mealtime! He lives with other male dogs, ranging from 6-50 pounds, and does great with all of them. He has zero aggression, with dogs or people. But he’s met kids and adults and is fine with everyone.

He is housebroken, but sometimes in the morning when he first wakes up he can’t wait, and may pee. He has learned pretty quickly to let us know when he has to go out-he’s a smart little guy! He loves to eat, and we’ve been feeding him 3 times a day to put a little weight on him. He loves to be near you. Even if you don’t have time to pet him, he just wants to know you’re there. He just needs a family who will give him some time to learn that he’s safe.

Once he’s comfortable, he starts to get silly, and will bounce around and bark. Otherwise he’s pretty quiet.
He is an easy foster. He fits in our house like he’s always been here, once he become comfortable. We don’t know if he had a great life in his past, but we know his future looks bright.

Will you give Floyd the chance to become your next family member? He has so much love to give.
