Say hello to LILY LANGTRY, a 1-year-old, 27-pound beauty, who loves nothing more than courting love and attention from everyone she meets (including the staff at the vet’s office)! Lily is what we like to call a “Velcro border collie,” leaning into whoever is closest to her and looking up at them adoringly. She is also a spirited, fun-loving girl, who runs rocket fast, plays, and leaps for the sheer joy of it.
Even as she is devoted to her person—right now her foster mom—she is more than capable of entertaining herself, sometimes throwing toys for herself to catch, or piling up all of toys and pouncing on the pile, or even dragging her flirt pole around the yard until her foster mom gives in and plays with it with her. Lily also likes playing with other dogs her approximate size and play style. She currently lives with a grumpy old male border collie and a “situationally friendly” young female border collie. She has won over the old boy, who now consents to her walking next to him and giving him a good sniff. Most importantly, when he says he’s had enough of her attentions, she listens immediately and walks away to find some other fun. Lily will chase and be chased by the young female BC when allowed, and when the young female is not feeling friendly and snaps at Lily, Lily simply walks away—no hurt feelings—and finds something else fun to do. She would welcome having another like-minded play pal to live with, as long as her people give her enough one-on-one attention and training, but she would also be happy as an only dog. Lily has not been exposed to cats, but we know she can’t live in a home with chickens.
Lily has begun some basic training and loves to learn. She walks on a slip leash, but doesn’t yet know how to behave on a walk. She knows what “sit” means, but doesn’t yet know where to position herself. She loves to know when she has done what you want; she simply melts with happiness. She is soft (rather than fearful) and collapses a bit when she thinks she’s done something wrong or if you’re cross with her. So, positive reinforcement works beautifully with this girlie. She picks things up quickly.
She is both treat and toy-motivated, but also responds to an upbeat or kind voice and to touch. Lily loves to tug, and she retrieves toys and balls. She is fast and very athletic. She would not be happy with walks around the neighborhood and catching a ball in the backyard (although those things could meet part of her activity needs).
Lily is crate-trained. She loves her crate at home, and she rides in a crate nicely in the car (after whining for a minute or two). A stuffed Kong or chew bone works wonders for a longer car ride. She alerts in her crate when she has to potty. She has also occasionally “submissively piddled,” when someone she doesn’t know greeted her, but that hasn’t happened in quite some time.
We are looking for a home for Lily where someone will provide the stimulation, direction, and attention she needs to grow into the best border collie girlie she can be. While she is a soft and sweet dog, is not a couch potato. She is smart as a whip, has rocket blast energy, and a border collie’s need for things to stimulate her border collie need to think and “work.”
LILY is micro-chipped, spayed, heartworm negative and on preventative, and up-to-date on vaccinations.
