My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In addition to the following profile for this dog, please first read the Adoption Information at http://www.shihtzurescuemn.org/adopt.html to understand the process, requirements and timeline for adoption. An adoption application can also be found in the Adoption Info section. If, after reading that information, you have any questions, please submit your question via e-mail and it will be answered. Please do not request a phone call. A personal phone call will only be made when an adoption application has been submitted and the foster parent wishes to consider the application. Thank you!

Maddie is an adorable 6-year-old Shih-Tzu girl with a sweet, quiet, lovey personality. She has a white coat with some milk chocolate-colored spots, and big brown eyes. She is a petite little lady weighing around 15 pounds. Maddie is a puppy mill survivor who came into our rescue on Sunday, July 2nd.
Maddie enjoys a little scratch around the ears and being the center of attention and loves getting a little pet on the back. She likes to cuddle on the couch or sleep by your feet. She is initially shy and reserved, but once she trusts you, she will show you all the love. She wants attention and has one of the sweetest, playful personalities. And she loves good food!
She will thrive in a house with another small dog, and has learned quickly things from her foster dog sibling, such as how to maneuver steps both up and down. Despite having no previous socialization, Maddie easily becomes comfortable with people and small to mid-sized dogs. She enjoys hanging out with her foster mom in her home office. Maddie sleeps in an open kennel in the bedroom and she is quite comfortable with that. She likes a quiet home, and she retreats to room far away if there are loud noises in the house, such as a vacuum cleaner.
Maddie loves her breakfast and then likes to take a walk around the block. She quickly learned how to walk on a leash and she welcomes meeting other small dogs, doing the Shih-Tzu dance when she meets them. The secure backyard is also a favorite spot for her. She enjoys playing with the resident cat and Shih Tzu in the backyard, so a fenced in yard would be necessary. Her favorite place inside the house is hanging with her Shih Tzu foster sibling. They will run around like a couple of track and field stars chasing each other and then take a nap.
Potty training is coming along, and her new family must be patient and committed to helping Maddie become housetrained. There will be some accidents! She does understand “come” but is not familiar with other commands. Maddie has dry eye, which will require the daily administration of prescription eye drops for the rest of her life. But she is very cooperative, and putting in the drops is very easy. She also needs to lose a few pounds, so her family must help her trim some of those pounds through a healthy diet and exercise.
These are the requirements for Maddie’s new family:
1. Must be home for much of the day. Maddie has been deprived of affection for all of her life, and she deserves to be the center of attention by her family.
2. A QUIET household, one with little noise and rambunctious activity.
3. Family must be patient and committed to helping Maddie become housetrained.
4. Another small dog of a similar temperament in the house would be great. Maddie really enjoys playing with another dog.
5. A secure, fenced yard is required, where she can play while being supervised by her family. After being caged for her whole life, she is really enjoying the freedom of being able to run around unhindered.
6. Must administer prescription eye drops daily for the rest of Maddie’s life. Must also give Maddie a calorie appropriate diet of premium food and limited treats to help her lose a few pounds.
7. A family with gentle, older children will be considered. But remember, Maddie needs a QUIET household, so children’s lifestyle, friends and activities must be taken into account.
8. Family should live within 40 miles of Lakeville, MN and agree to attend the Shih Tzu Rescue Reunion held each September.
Maddie will be spayed on August 2nd and will have a dental the first week in September. She is current on vaccinations, microchipped, and on heartworm and flea/tick preventive. She will require daily prescription eye drops for the rest of her life. Even though Maddie will not be ready for adoption until after the first week in September, we are currently accepting adoption applications for her. They will be reviewed and processed, so that she will be able to go to her new home as soon as her dental is completed and she has recovered.
Maddie’s adoption fee is $320.00 plus $24.08 sales tax for a total of $344.08. To meet Maddie, please complete an adoption application at the website listed in the first paragraph. Or you can also see her and the other dogs available for adoption from Shih Tzu Rescue of Minnesota by visiting with us from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon the first Saturday of every month at Chuck and Don’s at 6821 York Avenue South, Edina near Southdale.
