My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

“Hi friends!! I’m Okra! I’m a pocket-sized itty bitty pittie who loves soft pets and cuddle sessions with my humans. I love giving hugs too, and I’ve been told I have the cutest little crooked-tail ever, which I always make sure to wag extra hard when my friends say hello!

Before the shelter, my life was not too good… my old family kept me in a crate outside and I had no food or water. I also could barely stand up in there, and there was no room to go to the bathroom… Now that I’m at the shelter, I’ve made so many volunteer friends. I love getting out for walks and playtime, and my friends have given me so much love. I’ve learned some new tricks like “sit” which I’m really good at! And I also learned how to walk nicely on leash. Aside from my volunteer friends, I am not a big fan of the shelter though, and I still hope one day a new family will take me home and let me sleep inside. I hope my new family will give me treats and love like my shelter friends do.

I’ve been lucky enough to go on an extended overnight with one of my volunteer besties! We’ve had so much fun playing together and going for neighborhood walks. In a home, I am super house trained and quiet, and I love playing with toys and doing puzzle games to find all the treatos. I also love watching my humans cook and do the dishes too! They are fascinating creatures. Because my life has been pretty tough, and I really struggle in the shelter, I prefer to be the only pet in a home for now. I’m still learning how to be a family dog, since no one ever let me in the house before. But trust me, I have so much love to give, you won’t be missing out with me as your one and only!!

Please reach out to my volunteer friends at orangedotcrew@gmail.com if you want to learn more about me! I am a top priority for finding a home, and I promise to be the goodest boy if you give me a chance to be a part of your family.”

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats & kittens up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
$30 small animals
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

Go meet their pets

The Austin Animal Center is open for adoptions every day from 11:00am to 7:00pm. We're closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Thanksgiving Day to give our staff some time with family.
Interested adopters should come to the shelter during business hours to meet with a counselor start looking for a pet who'll be a good fit. Our counselors and volunteers are happy to help with that process.

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
