My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Raphael (Raffy) is a 2 year old, male red/white purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi and he weighs about 23 pounds. He is current on his shots, has been neutered and is microchipped. He is very friendly but is a special needs dog as he has chronic, bi-lateral KCS (dry eye). He will need lifetime eye care. We do not ship out of California. Here is his story: Raffy was born on 8/19/03 in a puppymill. Sometime in October of 2003, he was sold to a Southern California pet store. A young man purchased Raffy from the pet store as a gift for his then girlfriend. Since that time and the time he was rescued from the shelter, little is known of Raffy’s life. Presently, the young man is serving in the U.S. military somewhere in Iraq and the girlfriend’s whereabouts are unknown. In January of 2006, Raffy was found on the streets of West Covina. A good Samaritan, took him in, saw the condition of his eyes and took him to a veterinarian. The vet diagnosed Raffy with Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), otherwise known as "dry eye". The vet explained that Raffy will need special drops in his eyes for the rest of his life. The good Samaritan felt that it was best to let the authorities take over and turned him into the shelter. The shelter made every attempt to find Raffy’s family. They did, in fact, find out the history of this little lost guy as outlined above. You’re probably asking yourself, "how did they get all of that and still not find his person?" The answer is that Raffy had a microchip and the information was traced thru that chip! With lots of phone work, the story slowly took shape. But still, there was no home for Raffy and he needed more care than the shelter could supply. Rescue was called and rescue stepped up to help this young guy have a chance at a good life. KCS is a treatable condition. Special drops help Raffy make his own tears to moisten his eyes and he receives lubricant eye drops, just like people with this condition. It is not known how Raffy came to have dry eye, there are many possible causes. Dry eye can be genetic, or caused by trauma or could even be the result of exposure to certain substances. There is no way to tell how this came to be for Raffy. Raffy is a loving and lovable boy. He has a zest for life and a joy unmatched. He loves to go for walks or rides in the car. Despite the KCS, Raffy sees and doesn’t need any special treatment other than his medications. Raffy doesn’t know that he is different from anyone else! When we asked his vet how this can be, she said, "this is his life, he’s lived with it for years and accepts it, he is used to it". However, Raffy does need a home with a diligent guardian. Someone that will make sure that he gets the care he so deserves. He is not blind and with care, there is no need to fear that he will go blind. He loves to run and play. He will chase a ball or another doggie. He plays with toys and has a great appetite for food and life alike! Are you that special person for Raffy? Will you open your heart and home to this little homeless fur kid? If you would like to apply to adopt Raffy. Email for a pre adoption application to corgially@mindspring.com.
