Viper is a male Shepherd/Lab mix.

I am a very large boy. I do not know my own size or strength. (Older children 12+) I recently had the opportunity for a 10-week training course where I learned many tricks and commands. I am back at the shelter and would really like to find my forever home so I can put what I learned to good use. Just have lots of treats on hand!!

I will need someone with large-breed dog experience. I strongly recommend having a physically fenced-in yard. I may require it pending your previous experience, location, and/or other plans for containment. I may be okay with another dog, but I am too big for small breeds (I will not respect them). The match-up would really depend on the current dog's personality. I may learn to respect a cat, with lots and lots of work.

I walk well on a leash but can get distracted easily. I need to be reminded, all fours on the floor. The shelter is a busy place for a dog like me. I know I will make a great companion for the right situation.

Processing takes 3-5 business days. We are currently not scheduling any visits without an approved application.

Meet the Pet

After approval, we will schedule you/your household to visit + meet the pet of interest.

4.
Take the Pet Home

At the end of your visit, we would be able to complete adoption papers + you will take your new companion home!

All adoptions begin with an application on our main website, HSSCM.ORG.
Once your application is competed and submitted, processing generally takes 3 business days- pending our schedule and the number of applications ahead of yours. Once processed we will contact you and, if approved, will set up an appointment for an adoption counsel. If you are looking to adopt a dog and have a current dog in the home, we will require a match-up before finalizing any adoption.

About Us:
We are the area's nonprofit advocate, sanctuary and source for companion animals since 1887.

Our Mission:
-to protect animals from suffering and cruelty
-to provide safe and responsible care for unwanted or abused companion animals
-to enhance the lives of animals and people through education, adoption, and foster care.

We believe in second chances at the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. Our service area includes all of Calhoun County and parts of Kalamazoo, Barry and Branch counties. We keep animals as long as it takes to find a good home for adoption once the animal passes temperament testing and is checked for good health. The Watkins Road shelter cares for up to 100 animals a day, and adopts out more than 500 animals a year. Countless area residents use the Society’s animal care, adoption and education programs each year. The Humane Society is overseen by a board of directors. We do not receive any government or tax dollars, or national humane organization funding. Our services are made possible by people in our community who care about homeless cats and dogs - people like you!
