My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ziggy, a bundle of joy with a heart as big as his boundless energy. This super sweet pup is the epitome of playfulness and enthusiasm. At his core, Ziggy is a loving companion who adores both people and other dogs. He absolutely loves his time in playgroups, where his goofy personality shines. He's a social butterfly when it comes to interacting with his doggy friends, and his playful antics are bound to bring a smile to your face. However, it's important to note that Ziggy is currently best suited for a one-dog household. He will need work with a professional dog trainer to address his resource guarding issues he has exhibited towards other dogs before introducing him into a multidog household. Despite this focus, Ziggy's love for playing and being around other dogs remains a central part of his personality. His affection for people is equally heartwarming.

Ziggy was luck enough to go on a field trip through our foster program, Paws Around Town. This is what they said about him:

He's a really nice dog. He's almost 2 years old but seems much more like a puppy! He's energetic but not wild. Loved riding in the car & feeling the wind blow on his face thru the open window. He is very aware of his surroundings - always looking around, sniffing a lot, curious. He chased squirrels at Riverfront Dog Park & would love a backyard! He played fetch, tug of war & is very gentle accepting treats. He did not pull when walking (Martingale collar helped) but he did pull when strolling around Petco (so exciting in there!) He was nice to human strangers & got really excited with every dog we encountered. I think he would be intense when playing with other dogs & would need a canine playmate who could manage his style of play. He enjoyed back scratches, belly rubs & would come over to me for attention when he wanted it. He's very treat motivated so would likely be easy to train. His teeth are a beautiful white & his ears are pink & healthy. And he likes playing in the water. I enjoyed my time with Ziggy!

More about this shelter

Charleston Humane Society was founded in Charleston and received a state charter in 1874. Its immediate concerns were to combat the rampant cruelty to animals. This included the neglect of work-animals, the inhumane shipping of cattle, and the epidemic of stray dogs.

In 1940, the Society adopted the name of its early Board President, John Ancrum, honoring a contribution made from his estate.

We then changed our name to Charleston Animal Society to better reflect our location and what we do!

During the mid-1900's, the organization worked to outlaw cruel animal "sports". One such example was gander pulling which involved a horseback rider tearing the head from a live goose while racing full speed. The society also campaigned successfully to improve the abominable conditions of the city-operated dog pound.

A Safe Haven

The society continued to work toward a more humane environment to house abandoned animals and permanent homes. In 1948, private funds were raised to open the first animal shelter on Meeting Street. As the pet population grew, other sites followed. Volunteers managed the operation of these facilities and local veterinarians donated their services.
Charleston Animal Society assumed residency at its Leeds Avenue location in 1981. This first-class facility reflected a long and cooperative partnership between the agency and Charleston County Council. Upon completion of the shelter, the county terminated its own animal pound and contracted with the SPCA to provide care for all of the animals collected by animal control officers. With the communities help, in 2008,we moved into our current shelter which is State of the Art. A 31,000 sq ft of lifesaving space , a high volume AAHA accredited spay-neuter clinic and amazing animal services sheltering facility.
The Charleston Animal Society continues to fight animal cruelty, find safe homes for unwanted, injured or abandoned animals and reduce pet overpopulation.
