My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/.

Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit.

Penelope is a very special little girl. She was taken from her owners due to cruelty charges. She was a matted mess and had to be shaved down at the shelter.

Despite all she’s been through, she is precious. She is 11 pounds of adorable. She loves attention! Someone loved her at some point-she knows some commands, like sit, paw, and dance! She is nervous upon first meeting, but is desperate for love, so she quickly warms up. She’s great with other dogs, and almost seems to take cues from them. She sees us carrying and petting our dogs, and it seemed to make her more comfortable with us.

She is healthy-she had a dental with us, and our vet felt a spay scar, so we believe she is spayed. She’s on no medication. When she arrived, she had a GI parasite called coccidia, but has been treated. She’s mostly housebroken, we are learning her signals, and she’s learning how to let us know she has to go out. She is listed as 13, but she is awful spry for 13, so she may be younger. She jumps on and off furniture, and can go up and down steps easily. She is pretty calm, and loves napping near her people.

She will need someone very patient to help her learn that people are safe. Sometimes when you’re standing up and reach for her, she runs away. But sit on the couch, and she’ll jump right up in your lap!! She is also a foodie, and goes crazy for treats! Sometimes she’s nervous to eat her meals around people; it’s heartbreaking. She does well home alone with other dogs but if she's the only one in the house she can have some separation anxiety. That could improve once she's more settled and comfortable.

She doesn’t bark much, but she does on occasion. She’s easily redirected, though.

Penny just wants love and a lap to snooze in. She is an absolute delight, and has come such a long way in rescue. She just needs someone with patience to work with her and show her that she has nothing to fear from humans ever again.

Can you give this sweet, adorable little girl her safe place to land?
