My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My name is Maggie. I was given that name after the main character in the Julia Roberts movie "Runaway Bride" because when I arrived at my foster, I tried to run away from everyone and everything – people, treats, baths, comfy beds – everything. I didn't know anything or anyone and I just wanted to be left alone. But I've learned that the right people will keep me clean and fed, offer treats (which I take very gently), and give me the attention I want on my own terms. Now instead of trying to run away, I look forward to putting on the leash and going walks all over the place.

The vets say I’m less than 2 years old, and I weigh 42lbs. I had my “cherry eyes” fixed when I got spayed, but they just came back, so for now this is just what my cute face looks like. I’m housetrained, and I'm super calm when walking around and am fine with other dogs. As for people, sometimes I'm a little nervous at first and will casually hide behind your legs, but that usually doesn't last very long. I really love people and will roll over for belly rubs pretty quickly for anyone being friendly. Birds and squirrels are evil though, and every time I see one, they have to be put in their place! I'll go from calm, well-behaved dog to a loud barker, pulling hard as I can trying to climb a tree if I see one of those small furballs scamper up a branch. Sometimes busy roads with big trucks make me a bit more nervous, but normal neighborhood streets are great, and for the most part I'm a quiet, loose-leash walking kind of gal.

As I come out of my shell, I'm showing everyone I have a few tricks up my sleeve. I sort of know how to sit, and I love giving paw. I like snuggling next to you on the couch and will gently nudge you when you need to give me more pets. I'm fine staying at home alone and am not into destroying pillows or cushions, but if you're home and I'm not able to get to you, I can be super sad – and I'll let you know with some mournful whines and puppy eyes. All of that, plus my adorable floppy ears and my slightly smaller than average-bulldog sized body (I think I'm part beagle!), usually makes me irresistible. I'm fine with stairs, and even though I love the couch, I still remember how safe my crate made me feel during those first few days and will sometimes go sleep there. I used to be nervous when hands would reach for me, especially around my ears, but that quickly went away, and one of my favorite things now are head and neck scratches.

I may have been named Maggie because I wanted to run away, but now I'd rather cuddle on the couch at home with you and yell at squirrels.
