My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tamami (Beautiful Gem) was adopted from a shelter in Chicago. Sadly her new family left her chained outside and she was returned to the shelter when she developed flea dermatitis. The folks at the shelter have successfully treated her and they contacted MARS for our assistance in ensuring Tamami’s next home is with an Akita savvy family that will appreciate and cherish this sweet girl.

When we accept an orphan into our program we usually need to give them a name. While it may not seem important considering what most of our orphans have been through, we do try to find a name that represents their personality or story. Tamami wasn't the first name selected for this special girl. But at the same time we received these pictures from her foster Dad, another one of volunteers was suggesting Tamami which means Beautiful Gem. It was a perfect fit.

Tamami is five and she is spayed. Her vaccinations are current and she is heartworm negative. She passed the shelter’s temperament test and was very good on the ride from Chicago to Fort Wayne, IN where she is being fostered.

Just like a jeweler applies his craft to turn a dull lifeless rock into a beautiful shining gem; the care and love of rescue have transformed our latest orphan into a beautiful shining Akita. While we never touch up photos (we leave that for the folks in Hollywood), we have to admit that a good grooming helped contribute to Tamami's dramatic transformation. But the peaceful inner glow is the craft of rescue work. If you would like to know more about Tamami, please email Deanna O’Brien at marsakita@sbcglobal.net or call 773-594-9302.
